WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? National Public Radio named Gary Knell, the head of Sesame Workshop, its president and chief executive, the network said on Sunday, taking over after NPR was hit by two high-profile controversies.

Knell, 57, succeeds Vivian Schiller. She resigned in March after the release of videotape showing an NPR fundraiser criticizing conservatives and questioning whether NPR needed federal funding. NPR also fired analyst Juan Williams last fall after he said in a Fox News interview that he felt nervous when he saw people in "Muslim garb" on airplanes.
Knell said he hoped to "calm the waters a bit" at NPR, the network quoted him as saying on its website.
He also said he hopes to "depoliticize" partisan debate over the future of public radio.
"It's not about liberal or conservative - it's about fairness," Knell said.

COLOMBO (Reuters) ? Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Sunday said natural gas has been found off the Indian Ocean island nation in the Mannar Basin, in a well Cairn India Ltd. said required more exploration to see if it is commercially viable.
Cairn, a subsidiary of London-listed Cairn Energy Plc, said the find was Sri Lanka's first confirmed hydrocarbon discovery.
"Explorers have informed me that they have found a gas deposit in the seabed," presidential spokesman Wijayananda Herath quoted Rajapaksa as saying to an audience in the hill city of Kandy.
Cairn Lanka, a subsidiary of Cairn India, has one of eight blocks in the Mannar Basin and began drilling in August.
It struck a 25-metre hydrocarbon column showing primarily gas with "other liquid hydrocarbon potential" in the CLPL-Dorado-91H/1z wildcat well, drilled at a water depth of 1,354 metres (4,442 feet).
"Further drilling will be required to establish the commerciality of the discovery," Cairn said in a statement.
In 2007, the government gave one Mannar block each to India and China, but neither has drilled. The remaining five blocks are to be awarded by tender.
"We are optimistic that this will be commercially successful," Petroleum Industries Minister Susil Premajayantha told Reuters. "Now with this discovery, we can get good competition and offers for the remaining five blocks when we go for tendering."
Interest in the blocks has grown, but most operators have been happy to let Cairn try its luck before making any commitments while the government smooths an erratic oil and gas regulatory regime, diplomats following the exploration in Sri Lanka have told Reuters.
It is unclear whether the find will affect terms of a deal by London-listed miner Vedanta Resources to take a majority stake in Cairn India.
Sri Lanka's government has said seismic data shows the potential for more than 1 billion barrels of oil under the sea in a 30,000 sq km area of the Mannar Basin, off the island's north western coast.
Sri Lanka produces no oil and is dependent on imports, which cost it $3 billion in 2009. Since the end of a 25-year war with Tamil separatists two years ago, the government has tried to reinvigorate oil and gas exploration.
American and Russian companies from the mid-1960s to 1984 explored the Cauvery Basin off the northern shore, but only traces were found and no commercial oil was produced.
Violence onshore from Sri Lanka's civil war with the Tamil Tigers ended offshore exploration there.
There are nearly 30 operating wells on the Indian side of the Cauvery Basin, and Calgary-based Bengal Energy Ltd. has exploration rights for 1,362 sq km there. Sri Lanka is hopeful that success will be reflected on its side of the field.
There is also speculation that Sri Lanka's eastern coastal shelf has major oil and gas potential, but there is no seismic data yet to back it up.

Southeastern Conference rivals LSU and Alabama held the top two spots in The Associated Press college football poll after the Crimson Tide jumped past No. 3 Oklahoma and into second.

Our busy lives are crazy enough without having to compare five hundred mutual funds ? we just want simple ways to manage our finances and save a little money.

I went through all of the budget exercises in the financial guidebook and created a budget for myself. The only problem is that when I was done and I tried to follow it, it felt really restrictive. I stuck to it for a few months, but it was just miserable. I didn?t like how some set of rules told me how I could spend my money.
I guess I don?t understand how people make budgeting work. How did you do it?
First of all, you?re living by a lot of financial rules by simply existing in our current economy. If you have a job, bring home some pay, and keep yourself from being in too much debt, you?re already playing with a mountain of rules. You?re already making a lot of hard choices about what to buy simply by existing.
Every single one of us would behave differently if money were no object. If money were no object, I?d start construction on my dream house tomorrow, but I can?t because money is a concern. I can?t have everything that I want right now.
Thus, we prioritize. We choose to buy some things now and hold off on other things. This is the normal course of life. We can?t have everything, so we have to choose.
All a budget does is make you sit back and think about those choices. Without budgeting, we largely make those choices on instinct or on some vague idea of where we?re headed.
A budget means that you?ve sat back, thought about your choices outside of the temptations of the moment, and chosen a different path. That path depends wholly on what you want from your life and from your future.
Does it mean you give up some freedom of choice in the moment? It sure can, depending on how exactly you budget things.
The question really is how much is that freedom of choice in the moment worth? Is the ability to buy a latte whenever you feel like it worth giving up a steady path toward your financial goals?
I don?t think there?s a single correct answer to that question. For me, I?ve lived on both sides of that coin and I?ve found I prefer living a life that?s headed toward financial goals rather than a life of increased instant gratification.
Everyone is wired differently, and because of that, everyone should budget differently. An approach that might work for you, Jenny, is to automate saving for your goals. Simply make sure that you?ve got separate accounts for the goals you have for the future and set up automatic transfers from your checking into those accounts.
Then, for a while, use just your debit card for impulsive purchases. You can have just as much freedom as you always had at that point, as you?re still bumping up against the real limit of the balance of your checking account.
Yes, you won?t have as much money for free spending as you once had, but you?ll have the feeling that your money is going somewhere productive and that you?re building a better future for yourself. In the end, that?s the real goal of the budgeting process.
