Mass. commuters save woman, son from train tracks

BOSTON (AP) ? Quick-thinking Boston-area commuters are being praised for rescuing a woman who tumbled off a subway platform and onto the tracks with her 4-year-old son in her arms.

Meera Thakrar, of Attleboro, says she thought the train on the outbound platform at the MIT/Kendall Square station in Cambridge was at her platform. She says she didn't even think as she walked off the precipice and crumpled to the ground, narrowly missing the electrified third rail.

Several commuters immediately jumped down to the tracks while others offered their hands to pull the 37-year-old woman and her son to safety.

They were taken to the hospital as a precaution for minor injuries.

One of the rescuers, who identified himself only as Kris, tells the Boston Herald he just acted on instinct.

Ecuador's Correa: re-election bid up to party, family

QUITO (Reuters) - President Rafael Correa of Ecuador said a decision on whether to run for re-election in February 2013 depends on the ruling party and his family, but that his responsibility was to guarantee that his "Citizens' Revolution" continues.

In power since 2007, Correa has implemented reforms aimed at increasing state revenue from the Andean country's natural resources and fighting a political and economic elite he says monopolized power for decades and did little for the poor majority.

High spending on roads, hospitals and schools has made Correa very popular, and he is well positioned to win the vote if he decides to run.

"First, Alianza Pais (Country Alliance) would make a decision, then I'd have to consult with my family," Correa told Reuters in an interview.

"From a personal point of view, I've always said that we have the responsibility to guarantee that this project which is changing Ecuador in a radical way continues, so one would have to take on that responsibility."

Correa said his family has had to cope with high-security protocols and lack of privacy since 2007, and it may not be fair to his Belgian wife and his three children to continue like that for four more years.

"The family suffers a lot ... one can bear the consequences of this decision (being president), but I wonder if it is fair that my loved ones also have to bear the consequences of my decisions," said the 49-year-old economist.

RUNNING MATE

If Correa runs for another term, he will need to pick a new running mate because Vice President Lenin Moreno has said he will not stand again for health reasons.

Moreno, a former writer and comedian, is confined to a wheelchair after being shot in a botched armed robbery in the late 1990s. He is very popular, and his absence from Correa's team could dent support for the leftist leader.

Correa, who dubbed his movement from the outset a "Citizens' Revolution," is very popular especially in poor rural areas and shantytowns. High oil prices for the OPEC member's production and increased tax revenues have allowed him to continue spending heavily in the months leading to the election.

The opposition is divided and lacks a charismatic leader.

Possible rivals include his brother and businessman Fabricio Correa; a banker from the coastal city of Guayaquil, Guillermo Lasso, and four-time presidential hopeful and banana magnate Alvaro Noboa.

Those three are expected to officially announce their bids for the presidency in the next couple of months, and the campaign should get into full swing in the last two months of the year.

Correa has been criticized for amassing too much power, but he has brought stability to the nation. Three presidents were forced to resign due to widespread protests during the decade before he took office.

Correa is a member of a bloc of leftist presidents in Latin America that includes Hugo Chavez in Venezuela and Evo Morales in Bolivia. They are fervent critics of U.S. "imperialism" and have put in place policies to boost state revenue from their countries' natural resources.

A scandal over signatures to register political parties has heated up the pre-election climate in Ecuador. Hundreds of Ecuadoreans have complained that political parties registered their signatures without their consent.

The national election board is investigating the affair and has said it may give parties extra time to reach the nearly 160,000-signature minimum required. But it could also ban organizations found to have committed irregularities.

Error helps Rockies sweep Mets

By RONALD BLUM

NEW YORK (AP) - Collin McHugh pitched two-hit ball over seven scoreless innings for the Mets in his major league debut, but the Colorado Rockies completed their second straight four-game sweep of New York with a 1-0 victory Thursday as Jordany Valdespin misplayed Tyler Colvin's leadoff drive in the eighth into a game-changing triple.

Colorado tied a season high with its fifth straight win and completed its second four-game sweep in two years at Citi Field.

McHugh, a 25-year-old right-hander, pitched masterfully with nine strikeouts and one walk. But after he left, the Rockies broke through quickly off Bobby Parnell (2-3).

Colvin hit his second pitch to straightaway center, where the rookie Valdespin took two steps in, then realized he had misjudged the drive. He backpedaled a half-dozen steps and tried for a backhand grab, but the ball sailed over his glove.

Chris Nelson fouled off a pair of 0-2 pitches, then singled to center past the drawn-in infield.

Rex Brothers (8-2) pitched two innings for the win, and Will Harris allowed a two-out double to Ruben Tejada in the eighth before striking out Josh Thole on three pitches.

Matt Belisle, Colorado's fifth pitcher, got his first save since June 22, 2010, against Boston following some ninth-inning drama.

Pinch-hitter Justin Turner singled leading off and was sacrificed to second by Valdespin. Daniel Murphy flied to center and David Wright flied to right.

The punchless Mets went 0 for 10 with runners in scoring position and were held to two runs or fewer for the sixth straight game, the first time that's happened since a streak of seven in a row from Sept. 17-21, 1982, according to STATS LLC. The Mets dropped to 11-28 since the All-Star break, which includes a 2-14 mark at Citi Field, and are 11 games under .500 for the first time since they finished 70-92 in 2009.

Taking the rotation slot of injured ace Johan Santana, McHugh threw 63 of 100 pitches for strikes. After Charlie Blackmon's opposite-field double to left leading off the game, McHugh retired 20 of 22 batters around D.J. LeMahieu's double starting the third and Carlos Gonzalez's two-out walk in the fourth.

Last weekend, McHugh pitched seven scoreless innings for Triple-A Buffalo against Pawtucket at Boston's Fenway Park. McHugh describes himself on his Twitter account as a "freelance meteorologist & professional baseball player."

McHugh became the sixth Mets starter to pitch shutout ball in his debut, according to STATS LLC, joining Dick Rusteck (1966), Tim Leary (1981), Masato Yoshii (1998), Tyler Yates (2004) and Matt Harvey (July 26 at Arizona). Only Rusteck pitched longer, throwing a four-hitter against Cincinnati.

Blackmon, like McHugh a product from an Atlanta-area high school, was sacrificed to third following his double. McHugh stranded him there, throwing a called third strike past Jordan Pacheco and fanning Gonzalez.

Colorado switched in June to a four-man rotation, instituting a limit of 75 pitches per start. Even though the Rockies are back to five starters for now, Tyler Chatwood was pulled after 65 pitches. He allowed three hits in three scoreless innings, then was replaced by Adam Ottavino.

Ottavino, a 2003 graduate of Brooklyn's Berkeley Carroll School, allowed one hit over two innings.

New York, in the midst of a deep funk, helped the Rockies out of potential trouble. Mike Baxter misjudged Tejada's popped ball to center with one out in the second and was thrown out at second by Colvin, costing Tejada a single.

NOTES: Gold medal-winning American gymnast Gabby Douglas threw out a ceremonial first pitch. It was a high, arching pitch from the front of the mound that was caught to the first-base side of the plate by pitcher Robert Carson. Having not bounced the ball, Douglas raised both arms in triumph. ... The Mets canceled the option of C Rob Johnson to Buffalo and put him on the 15-day DL, retroactive to Aug. 15, with a ligament tear in his left thumb. ... Rockies CF Dexter Fowler was on crutches, his ankle wrapped, after spraining it Wednesday night. Manager Jim Tracy said he wasn't available but the medical staff told him Fowler was day to day. ... Mets 1B Ike Davis dropped Wright's bounced throw from third on Wilin Rosario's grounder leading off the second, but Davis picked up the ball with his bare hand in time for the out. ... The Mets offered a kids-go-free if accompanied by adults promotion; the game drew 22,544, the 12th-lowest crowd ever at 4-year-old Citi Field. ... The Rockies also won five in a row from May 28 to June 1.

Mathews could be a 'top five guy'

Will HillAP

Will Hill is trying to convince the Giants he can play. Actually, the fact he?s talented has long been known, but his off-field issues kept him from making the NFL already.

As with many players with troubled pasts, Hill?s tale of redemption makes for a good story, and Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger has written an excellent one, detailing Hill?s checkered past and his attempt to put it behind him.

The former Florida safety scared teams off during the pre-draft process because of his general immaturity, but specifics which included a suspension at Florida, a series of Twitter posts talking about marijuana and prostitutes, a shady cast of friends he surrounded himself with and a run of bad interviews with teams he was supposedly trying to impress.

So he went undrafted. And unsigned after the draft. And largely ignored for a year, never even getting a practice-squad job.?Per Garafolo?s story, that seemed to humble Hill into making changes off the field. And after he impressed in a May tryout, the Giants are going to give him a chance in training camp.

And he may have landed in the perfect place for such a chance.

The Giants have shown an impressive ability to channel problem children, by putting them in a structured environment and surrounding them with more responsible teammates.

From Mario Manningham to Ahmad Bradshaw, they?ve taken chances on players others blanched at, and gotten positive results. That?s emboldened them to try with a few more, including third-round pick Jayron Hosley, who failed a drug test at the Combine and several others such as Hill who had their issues in college.

Giants general manager Jerry Reese said all were warned they?d be cut at the first indication of trouble, and admits he can?t know at the moment if players such as Hill are genuinely reformed.

?Well, I don?t know if he?s telling the truth. But I do know he?s felt the sting of not being on an NFL roster when he probably should be on one, as talented as he is,? Reese said. ?The sting of not having that and having to sit out and not being able to play, I think that helps you get your priorities straight.?

It also helps to land with a stable organization. While the Lions have rebounded in part by being willing to take on some questionable characters who can play, the long-term future of such a roster is unknown.

The Giants have a recent record of success, and a strong organization from Reese to coach Tom Coughlin, and that goes a long way toward being able to take chances, and mitigate the risks therein. But Reese isn?t just playing Father Flanagan. He wants good players.

And if Hill can be one, great. But if he screws up, he can be made example of, and that helps too.

Top German court to hold hearing on euro fund

(AP) ? Germany's highest court says it will hold a hearing next week on applications for injunctions against the eurozone's permanent rescue fund and Europe's new budget-discipline pact.

Germany's Parliament voted by a wide majority last Friday to approve both the ?500 billion ($633 billion) rescue fund, the European Stability Mechanism, and the budget pact ? the so-called fiscal compact, a cherished project of Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Opponents swiftly applied to the Federal Constitutional Court for injunctions blocking the plans while judges consider whether they're in line with German law. The court said Monday it will hold a hearing on the complaints July 10.

The ESM can't take effect without Germany's approval. President Joachim Gauck has agreed not to sign the legislation before the court rules on calls for injunctions.
