US, EU hopeful of new Iran nuke talks

(AP) ? The U.S. and the European Union said Tuesday they'll press on with sanctions against Iran, even as they hope the promise of new negotiations could lead to a diplomatic solution ending the nuclear standoff.

Appearing together at a news conference in the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo before continuing a joint tour of the Balkans in Serbia and Kosovo, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said both diplomacy and pressure would continue until Iran makes significant concessions over its disputed uranium enrichment activity.

"We continue to try and find ways to move forward on our negotiations," Ashton told reporters in Sarajevo. She cited contact over the weekend between a top aide and an assistant to Iran's chief nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili, and said she would be reaching out to Jalili "in the near future."

Still, there appeared to be no significant advance in the process since world powers instructed Ashton last month in New York to speak with Jalili and gauge Iran's seriousness on coming into compliance with its international nuclear negotiations. The West fears Iran may be trying to develop nuclear weapons, a charge Tehran denies.

The West has demanded that Iran must stop enriching uranium to 20 percent purity, shut down its underground Fordo enrichment site and ship its 20 percent stockpile out of the country. In return, Iran has been offered civilian plane spare parts and 20 percent-enriched nuclear fuel for its medical research reactor in Tehran.

Clinton said the U.S. message to Iran is clear. "The window remains open to resolve the international community's concerns about your nuclear program diplomatically and to relieve your isolation, but that window cannot remain open indefinitely. Therefore, we hope that there can be serious good-faith negotiations commenced soon."

Iran has sent mixed signals on its nuclear program. World powers cited increased flexibility from Iran in September when they agreed to lay the groundwork for a new round of negotiations, and on Tuesday Iran's Foreign Ministry said the standoff could be resolved if the U.S. and its partners recognize Iran's right to produce nuclear fuel.

But senior Iranian officials also have threatened to boost enrichment levels if the West doesn't ease sanctions. And the U.S. and its partners say measures that are crippling the Iranian economy will remain in force until Tehran first starts coming into compliance with its international obligations.

Clinton and Ashton spoke during the first leg of their tour of the Balkans, where they are urging rivals ethnic groups and governments to settle their differences for the good of their nations.

Seventeen years after the U.S.-led intervention ended Bosnia's civil war, Bosnia's Muslims, Serbs and Croats are split on how to unify the country or even to dissolve their federation entirely into separate ethnic parts. The Serb republic and the Bosniak-Croat federation have their own governments and parliaments, held together only weakly by a three-member presidency that Clinton and Ashton met with.

Clinton called efforts by some to roll back the Dayton Accords passed during the presidency of her husband "totally unacceptable," a reference to Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik's call for the dissolution of Bosnia. He has also denied the genocide of Bosnia's Muslims in the 1990s.

Clinton urged all Bosnia's leaders to "put aside their political differences, put aside the rhetoric of dissolution, secession and denial of what tragically happened in the war." She and Ashton said the country's slow pace of reforms and the inability of leaders to look past their ethnic constituencies are holding back its hopes of joining the EU and NATO, and leaving it behind neighbors such as Serbia, Croatia and Kosovo.

Later in Belgrade, the two met Serbia's nationalist president, Tomislav Nikolic, and Prime Minister Ivica Dacic.

Clinton told them that normalizing ties with Kosovo, which broke off from Serbia four years ago, is critical for Serbian aspirations of entering the 27-nation European Union. She urged progress in talks with Kosovo about issues such as freedom of movement, customs, utilities and government services, without calling for Belgrade to immediately recognize the independence of its former province.

After Serbia, the pair flew together on Clinton's plane to Kosovo's capital of Pristina, where they'll press top officials on similar matters on Wednesday. Afterward, Ashton will drop off the trip and Clinton will travel on to Croatia and Albania, NATO's two newest members.

Interior Design Ideas & Refurbish Tips to ... - My Home Sweet Home

This write-up contains helpful information you can rely upon while revamping your space and getting interiors done in a smart way. All the recommendations are for universal application based on basic living requirements. Inspiration is all you need to get started, and then it doesn?t take much time to turn dreams into reality. Let?s hope you enjoy every bit of this interesting endeavor.

Doing the interior designing of your own home is a journey filled with joyful moments, though stress cannot be overruled. It?s a matter of perception; in this case it?s more about how you look at things such as fabrics, colors, fixtures etc. You will definitely enjoy every bit of it if you like playing around with colors, trying out different textures, designing custom furniture and stuff like that. It?s your dream home, and the best part is that you can do it all by yourself. No need to hire a professional designer, you can think of better things and keep everything as per your taste. It?s even possible to revamp an existing space and give it a brand new look with very little changes. You can mix and match classic and modern designs, do your own little things and still have fabulous results.

Let?s get started with a few basics that you should grab a good hold of before dipping your clothes in color.

Adding color to your Home

It?s important to know the impact of different colors that they can have on the looks of your space. You may be aware that light colors expand and they make a space look bigger, and dark colors have an opposite impact as they contract. So, you may make the choice of colors based on the size of the space you are dealing with. The same concept can be followed in selecting the color scheme of the walls and the upholstery. When you go for light color themes then make sure that the walls are either white or something like ivory or beige.

You should learn your painting basics before decorating a room. When going for two or more colors, you should choose colors from the same family. It?s important that you choose a base color in combination with an accent color to get a pleasant contrast. Accent colors go well on cushions, blinds and even your rug would look nice in them. But, too much of accent color everywhere may not look good, so restrict to using it on two or three elements.

Role of Doors, Windows and Furniture in the Interior Design

Do remember that doors and windows are equally important in creating an overall impact. People do tend to ignore that these two impact security as well as light and air in the area. You should shop around for doors and windows which are water resistant, termite-proof and secure at the same time. These are the practical aspects that you must keep in mind, and don?t worry you won?t have to compromise much on the design. You can always opt for bay windows as they enhance outside view.

When it comes to furniture, you should be aiming for saving as much space as possible. One way to do that is to shop around for multi-purpose furniture. You should add multiple drawers to your dressing as it will then serve double purpose. Kid?s room can have a trundle bed as then they will have ample space for their daytime activities.

You will have a lot of trouble while choosing between fashionable and practical interior designs. Always remember, this is not a onetime expense, you will need to spend regularly on maintenance.

AT&T Mobile Safety School Tips for Parents with Children Ages 8-11 ...

Technology has really enhanced the way we communicate with each other on a daily bases.? We have learned to use cell phone technology as well as internet social networking sites as a way to communicate with family and others around the world. Parents are now finding that supplying their children with cell phones for daily contact and after school communication is a great way to stay in touch and know where our children are on a minute to minute bases. This is why AT&T is offering Mobile Safety school for parents with children ages 8-11.

My daughter just turned 12 year and she has been asking me for a cell phone for over a year. Last year when I picked her up from school I noticed that more than half of the kids had cell phones.? I honestly don?t think there is a need for her to have one at this time and I personally think that children at this age use them as a form of nonverbal communication through texting, as well as a means to cheat during classes.? Texting answers back and forth. After attending AT&T?s Mobile Safety School? I feel that if in the future I do provided my daughter with a cell phone I have the knowledge to make it a safe experience for her and keep me informed on important details on her use such as texting messages in and out, as well as location, and limiting numbers she can call.

AT&T? Cell Phone Safety Tips For Parents

Monitoring Phone Usage, Texts, and Calls

Parents may be saying they monitor their kids? phones, but actually give them more freedom. OR, parents are monitoring their kids? phones without telling them that they are doing so.

2 of 5 kids say their parents have not talked to them about mobile safety, and they are more likely to have heard from their parents about stranger danger, alcohol and drugs and sex education that these issues. While these are the standard safety issues that kids learn about from their parents and at school, these other issues are a reality for kids in today?s world.

Superstorm Sandy slams into New Jersey coastline

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) ? Superstorm Sandy slammed into the New Jersey coastline with 80 mph winds and hurled a record-breaking 13-foot surge of seawater at New York City on Monday, roaring ashore after washing away part of the Atlantic City boardwalk and putting the presidential campaign on hold.

Just before its center reached land, the storm was stripped of hurricane status, but the distinction was purely technical, based on its shape and internal temperature. It still packed hurricane-force wind, and forecasters were careful to say it remained every bit as dangerous to the 50 million people in its path.

The National Hurricane Center announced at 8 p.m. that Sandy had come ashore about five miles from Atlantic City. The sea surged a record of nearly 13 feet at the Battery, at the foot of Manhattan.

In an attempt to lessen damage from the storm, New York City's main utility cut power to about 6,500 customers in lower Manhattan, which includes Wall Street. Authorities worried that seawater would seep into the subway and cripple it, along with the electrical and communications systems vital to the nation's financial center.

As it closed in, Sandy knocked out power to more than 1.5 million people and smacked the boarded-up big cities of the Northeast corridor ? Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York and Boston, with stinging rain and gusts of more than 85 mph.

At least four deaths were blamed on the storm in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and New York. Among them were two people killed by falling trees.

As Sandy made its way toward land, it converged with a cold-weather system out of the west that turned into a fearsome superstorm, a monstrous hybrid consisting not only of rain and high wind but of snow. Forecasters warned of 20-foot waves bashing into the Chicago lakefront and up to 3 feet of snow in West Virginia.

Airlines canceled more than 12,000 flights, disrupting the plans of travelers all over the world, and storm damage was projected at $10 billion to $20 billion, meaning it could prove to be one of the costliest natural disasters in U.S. history.

President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney canceled their campaign appearances at the very height of the race, with just over a week to go before Election Day. The president pledged the government's help and made a direct plea from the White House to those in the storm's path.

"When they tell you to evacuate, you need to evacuate," he said. "Don't delay, don't pause, don't question the instructions that are being given, because this is a powerful storm."

Sandy, which killed 69 people in the Caribbean before making its way up the Atlantic, began to hook left at midday toward the New Jersey coast.

The storm lost its status as hurricane because it no longer had a warm core center nor the convection ? the upward air movement in the eye ? that traditional hurricanes have, but it was still as dangerous as it was when it was considered a hurricane, according to National Hurricane Center spokesman Dennis Feltgen.

Pete Wilson, who owns an antiques shop in Cape May, N.J., at the state's southern tip and directly in Sandy's path, said the water was 6 inches above the bottom edge of the door. He had already taken a truckload of antiques out but was certain he would take a big hit.

"My jewelry cases are going to be toast," he said. "I am not too happy. I am just going to have to wait, and hopefully clean up."

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said people were stranded in Atlantic City, which sits on a barrier island and was mostly under water late Monday. He accused the mayor of allowing them to stay there.

With the hurricane fast approaching, Christie warned it was no longer safe for rescuers, and advised people who didn't evacuate the barrier islands to "hunker down" until morning.

"I hope, I pray, that there won't be any loss of life because of it," he said.

While the hurricane's winds registered as only a Category 1 on a scale of five, it packed "astoundingly low" barometric pressure, giving it terrific energy to push water inland, said Kerry Emanuel, a professor of meteorology at MIT.

"We are looking at the highest storm surges ever recorded" in the Northeast, said Jeff Masters, meteorology director for Weather Underground, a private forecasting service. "The energy of the storm surge is off the charts, basically."

In New York City, authorities worried that salt water would seep through the boarded-up street grates and through the sandbags placed at subway entrances, damaging the electrical connections needed to operate the subway.

Hours before landfall, there was graphic evidence of the storm's power.

A construction crane atop a luxury high-rise in New York City collapsed in the wind and dangled precariously 74 floors above the street. Forecasters said the wind at the top the building may have been close to 95 mph.

Off North Carolina, a replica of the 18th-century sailing ship HMS Bounty that was built for the 1962 Marlon Brando movie "Mutiny on the Bounty" went down in the storm, and 14 crew members were rescued by helicopter from rubber lifeboats bobbing in 18-foot seas. Another crew member was found hours later but was unresponsive. The captain was missing.

At Cape May, water sloshed over the seawall, and it punched through dunes in other seaside communities. Sandy also tore away an old section of Atlantic City's historic boardwalk.

"When I think about how much water is already in the streets, and how much more is going to come with high tide tonight, this is going to be devastating," said Bob McDevitt, president of the main Atlantic City casino workers union. "I think this is going to be a really bad situation tonight."

In Maryland, at least 100 feet of a fishing pier at the beach resort of Ocean City was destroyed, and Gov. Martin O'Malley said there would be devastating flooding from the swollen Chesapeake Bay.

"There will be people who die and are killed in this storm," he said.

At least half a million people had been ordered to evacuate, including 375,000 from low-lying parts of New York City, and by the afternoon authorities were warning that it could be too late for people who had not left already.

Millions of people stayed home from work. Sheila Gladden evacuated her home in Philadelphia's flood-prone Eastwick neighborhood, which took on 5? feet of water during Hurricane Floyd in 1999, and headed for a hotel.

"I'm not going through this again," she said.

Those who stayed behind had few ways to get out. New York's subways, which serve 5 million people a day, were shut down. The Holland Tunnel connecting New York to New Jersey was closed, as was a tunnel between Brooklyn and Manhattan, and the city planned to shut down the Brooklyn Bridge, the George Washington, the Verrazano-Narrows and several other spans because of high winds.

Stock and bond markets were closed Monday and Tuesday, the first shutdown since the days after the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001 and the first two-day closing of the stock market because of weather since a blizzard in 1888. The New York Stock Exchange is inside the mandatory evacuation zone in lower Manhattan, blocks from New York Harbor.

If the storm reaches the higher estimate of $20 billion in damage, that would put it ahead of Hurricane Irene, which raked the Northeast in August 2011 and caused $16 billion in damage. Hurricane Katrina, which killed 1,200 people, cost $108 billion.

Stocks for the Long Run & Fall or Winter (Summer) ? World Beta ...

It looks like the 5th! Edition of Stocks for the Long Run will be out in a month or two. ?I am highly curious to see if Jeremy will admit that trendfollowing works in this edition. ?He has a chapter in the book where he examines trends on stocks, shows statistical evidence that it does work then concludes it doesn?t work. ?This edition will have the 2008/2009 bear market in the update, so hopefully he will also report max drawdown numbers as those matter more to investors than volatility.

5 Types Of Swimming Pool That Will Make ... - Our Home Tools

?

I?m guessing you?ve probably been in hundreds of swimming pools throughout your lifetime. Either ones in your local area, or when you?ve been on vacation somewhere at home and abroad. Maybe you?ve experienced every kind of pool imaginable. Can you remember what one you liked the most? Most people will usually always remember a pool that was that little bit special. You need to think long and hard about what you?ve enjoyed in the past, because when you decide to get a swimming pool built in your garden you?re left with a tough decision.

You can literally have any kind of pool you want, within reason, so instead of taking a stab in the dark you should go with something you know and love. A pool is a big deal and it?s not the type of thing you want to get wrong. Eventually your kids will grow up and they?ll look back on the swimming pool as somewhere they had some of the best times of their life. Maybe you?ve forgotten because it?s been a long time, so let?s have a look at some types of swimming pool you can have built and it should make your decision a little easier.

A pool for playing

2333526846 7865f71eb1 300x201 5 Types Of Swimming Pool That Will Make Everyone Happy

If you?re just looking for a pool you can play around in with the kids and maybe throw a ball about, it doesn?t really need to be as deep as an Olympic diving pool. It?s just going to make like difficult for some of the games you play. You?ll surely remember playing games in a deep pool and it?s almost impossible to do anything when your feet aren?t touching the bottom. A play pool should only be about 5ft deep in any area.

A pool for diving

3573884486 d24bc0c364 300x289 5 Types Of Swimming Pool That Will Make Everyone Happy

This one has to be deeper than the play pool otherwise something can go seriously wrong. People have really hurt themselves hitting their head off the bottom and in some cases it?s led to paralysis. If you or your kids have any aspirations to become a champion diver, or even if you just want somewhere save to do crazy jumps into the pool, then think about making it deeper. Don?t even think about adding a diving board if the pool isn?t deep enough.

Infinity edge pools

These are amazing and take the look of your garden to a new level altogether. You?ve probably seen them abroad and they can regularly be seen in travel brochures. The end of the pool looks like it?s running into the horizon and the water spills over the edge and gets caught in an overspill trough. If style is what you?re going for then an infinity edge reins supreme.

Swimming lengths

Some people don?t use their pool for playtime and they don?t even care what it looks like. All they want to do is jump in and get a great workout. Swimming lengths of the pool in the morning is a great way to keep fit and lose those unwanted pounds. You?re going to have to get a pool that?s rectangular shaped and long enough that you can swim a good distance before you have to turn, or you?re just going to get really annoyed after a few weeks.

Sloped pools

A swimming pool should be fun for everyone and if you have someone in the family that?s disabled it can be quite difficult for them to enjoy it. If they?re in a wheelchair it especially makes life difficult. You can build a sloped pool and it will allow someone to take them in while they sit in their chair. It seems like a no-brainer if there will be someone with a disability using your pool, and I?m sure they?ll appreciate you for it

Decline in incidence of heart attacks appears associated with smoke-free workplace laws

Decline in incidence of heart attacks appears associated with smoke-free workplace laws

Tuesday, October 30, 2012

A decline in the incidence of myocardial infarction (MI, heart attack) in one Minnesota county appears to be associated with the implementation of smoke-free workplace laws, according to a report published Online First by Archives of Internal Medicine, a JAMA Network publication.

Exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) is associated with coronary heart disease (CHD) in nonsmokers, and research suggests that the cardiovascular effects of SHS are nearly as large as those with active smoking, according to the study background. Elimination of smoking in public places, such as by smoke-free laws and policies, has the potential for reducing smoking and perhaps cardiovascular events.

Richard D. Hurt, M.D., and colleagues at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn., evaluated the incidence of MI and sudden cardiac death (SCD) in Olmsted County, Minn., during the 18-month period before and after implementation of smoke-free ordinances. In 2002, a smoke-free restaurant ordinance was implemented and, in 2007, all workplaces, including bars, became smoke free.

"We report a substantial decline in the incidence of MI from 18 months before the smoke-free restaurant law was implemented to 18 months after the comprehensive smoke-free workplace law was implemented five years later," the authors comment.

When comparing the 18 months before implementation of the smoke-free restaurant ordinance with the 18 months after implementation of the smoke-free workplace law, the incidence of MI declined by 33 percent from about 150.8 to 100.7 per 100,000 population, and the incidence of SCD declined by 17 percent from 109.1 to 92 per 100,000 population.

"All people should avoid SHS exposure as much as possible, and those with CHD should have no exposure to SHS," the authors conclude.

Commentary: Extending the Health Benefits of Clean Indoor Air Policies

In an invited commentary, Sara Kalkhoran, M.D., and Pamela M. Ling, M.D., M.P.H., of the University of California, San Francisco, write: "The results of the study by Hurt et al highlight some of the potential benefits of 100 percent smoke-free policies in workplaces, restaurants and bars: significantly decreased incidence of myocardial infarction and a trend toward decreased sudden cardiac death."

"Moving forward, we should prioritize the enforcement of smoke-free policies, eliminating loopholes in existing policies as well as encouraging expansion of smoke-free policies to include multiunit housing, motor vehicles, casinos and outdoor locations," they continue.

"Exposure to SHS should not be a condition of employment, and all workers, including those of lower income and those in the service and hospitality industries, should have equal protection from SHS exposure," they conclude.

(AP) ? It's early in the morning, and 13-year-old Ezzat is hard at work in one of Cairo's pottery workshops in an ancient part of the Egyptian capital. He sorts through the day's production. In the same area of workshops, three barefoot boys under the age of 12 carry clay pieces from inside the factory out into the sun to dry.

"I go to school, but I decided not to go today because it is time to paint the clay," said Ezzat, whose brother runs the workshop. Ezzat refused to give his last name.

The Egyptian government estimates that some 1.6 million minors work ? almost 10 percent of population aged 17 or under ? often in arduous conditions. Other experts put the number at nearly twice that, given that so many work in informal sectors and are difficult to track. In 2011, a U.S. Department of Labor report said Egypt had made some efforts to eliminate the worst forms of child labor, but it said the country has not addressed gaps in legal enforcement to protect children.

Some child labor activists worry that protections for children could be loosened further under the new constitution still being written. Earlier this month, the Egyptian Coalition for Children's Rights warned that early drafts of the document did not include as firm prohibitions on child labor as past constitutions.

In Cairo's Tahrir Square, famous as the epicenter of the 2011 revolution that toppled Hosni Mubarak's one-party rule, children can be seen selling flags, popcorn and tea whenever a demonstration draws a crowd. On calmer days when traffic is flowing through the square boys will try and wipe the city's dust off the cars stuck in traffic to earn a few coins. Young boys can be found in the more upmarket neighborhoods of Cairo flogging a dozen and a half fresh roses for 10 Egyptian pounds, about $1.6.

A young boy is almost never missing from an Egyptian mechanic's workshop. Usually covered in grease and grime they fetch the tools, get the dirtiest work and are often physically abused with little or no recourse.

A short drive out of Cairo and all along the vast Nile valley children can be found working in the fields as hired farmhands or on family plots. Brick factories along the Nile also employ children who often endure extreme physical exertion in hot weather.

Cleveland Clinic and IBM team up to make Watson a Doctor (video)

Image

Medical research facility Cleveland Clinic and IBM are teaming up to develop ways to let supercomputer Watson become a useful tool for doctors. The machine's ability to analyze language and scour its database for answers is hoped to offer quicker and more exhaustive diagnoses for patients. As modern medical students spend less time memorizing diseases, they're focusing on learning how to think critically and navigate the huge amount of available data. Big Blue is also hoping that the Jeopardy champion will learn how to digest a person's medical records in order to match up their history with maladies. We're just nervous that someone will give Watson a telepresence robot and send him out onto the wards -- you'd be worried about his bedside manner if you've seen his ruthless quizzing manner.

How to Handle Sandy's Flood Waters

Oct 30, 2012 11:24am

As the massive storm that began as Hurricane Sandy churns slowly away from the East Coast today it is leaving behind? floodwaters that have residents up to their knees and homes damaged and soaked.

Hurricane Sandy: Full Coverage

Rainfall totals of four to eight inches are expected? today over the mid-Atlantic states, while one to three inches are possible from New York through New England.? Parts of the mid-Atlantic and northeast states also remained under flash flood watches and warnings and normally dry areas near the coast could be vulnerable to potential flooding brought on by high tide, according to the National Weather Service.

The potential for even more flooding raises the potential for even more worries as the waters bring serious health risks ranging from infectious diseases to chemical hazards and injuries.

PHOTOS: Inside the Storm

?When that flood water comes into your home you have to worry about what is it bringing in with it,? ABC News Chief Health and Medical Editor Dr. Richard Besser said today on ?Good Morning America.?? ?You have to worry about contamination, animal waste and human waste that?s contaminated with bacteria.?

As former head of emergency response and preparedness for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,? Besser is familiar with the dangers that can come from not treating flood waters seriously. Below he offers four simple tips to keep you and your family safe.

Tip #1: Boil or Bleach Your Water

According to Besser, ?For a boiled water advisory you need to boil your water for at least one minute of full boil.? If you don?t have power and can?t do that you can take a gallon of water and add eight drops of bleach to? that water and that will make that safe to drink.?

Tip #2: Wait to Clean Out the Floods

?You want to have good light so you can see what you?re doing,? Besser said.? ?When you have a couple of feet of water in your basement there may be sharp objects.? There may also be electrical problems when you?re going into a basement that has water.?

Tip #3: Wear Protective Gear

?You don?t want it to come in contact so you want to wear boots and rubber gloves and goggles so that it?s not irritating your skin and? you want to wash off very well after doing that [cleaning].?

Tip #4: Pitch Any Flood-Tainted Food and Water

Any food, any water, even in a sealed package, that has come in contact with flood water, you want to get rid of that,?? Besser said. ?The one exception for that is canned goods.? You can take the labels off and either boil those cans or you can soak those cans in a bleach solution and then rinse those with clean water and use them.?

Fighting melanoma's resistance to chemotherapy

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Blocking the action of a particular protein in our skin could improve the treatment of skin cancers, according to a study recently published in Oncogene by Philippe Roux, a researcher at the University of Montreal's Institute for Research in Immunology and Cancer (IRIC). "Our findings reveal part of the mechanisms responsible for the resistance of melanoma to anti-cancer treatments, and suggest that a particular protein in our bodies called RSK may be targeted in combination therapies to overcome drug resistance," Roux explained.

Although melanoma accounts for only 4% of all skin cancers, it is responsible for 80% of skin cancer-related deaths worldwide as it is highly invasive and resistant to conventional chemotherapies. Melanoma originates from pigment-producing cells, called melanocytes, located in the skin. The incidence of malignant melanoma is growing rapidly worldwide and there is still no effective therapy to treat it. Approximately 160,000 new cases of the disease are diagnosed each year.

Roux and his team focused their research on a signaling pathway called Ras/MAPK, which is often deregulated in melanoma, but also in lung, colon and pancreatic cancers. A signaling pathway is a chemical chain reaction that causes the cells in our bodies to act in a certain way. In this study, Roux and his team found that a protein in the Ras/MAPK pathway, RSK, contributes to chemoresistance by altering the response of cancer cells to chemotherapeutic agents.

This is the second Oncogene publication for Philippe Roux this year. In a paper published in July, Roux and his colleagues, IRIC Principal Investigators Katherine Borden and Sylvain Meloche, demonstrated that the same protein involved in chemoresistance contributes to melanoma growth, making the protein RSK a promising therapeutic target for treating the disease.

The study was made possible thanks to grants from the Canadian Cancer Society Research Institute and the Cancer Research Society.

OmniVision unveils 5MP BSI sensor that takes low light cameras further into the entry level

OmniVision unveils 5MP sensor that takes low light photography to the entry level It's almost a truism that starter smartphones have poor cameras that struggle just to get pristine photos in broad daylight, let alone dim interiors. Thankfully, OmniVision's new OV5645 sensor could lead newcomers out of a very literal darkness. The 5-megapixel imager includes backside illumination, support for 1080p30 (or 720p60) video and its own internal autofocus system, but no dedicated JPEG compression engine -- in short, a lot of the low-light performance of more sophisticated smartphones without the usual attached costs. Its cost-cutting even extends to front cameras, as a forward-facing sensor can share resources with the back camera to scale back on redundant hardware. We're looking forward to when mass production starts in the first quarter of 2013; we might not have to excuse our photo quality for a long, long time afterwards.

Ukraine ruling party seems set for election win, nationalist surge seen

KIEV (Reuters) - Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich's party looks set to win a parliamentary majority after Sunday's election, but it may be hard pressed by an opposition boosted by resurgent nationalists and a liberal party headed by boxing champion Vitaly Klitschko.

Leaders of the ruling Party of the Regions claimed victory after exit polls put it in the lead with 28-30 percent of the voting in the part of balloting conducted by party lists.

A senior Regions official said he expected the party to pick up two thirds of the remaining vote in individual districts, ensuring it of a simple majority in the 450-seat assembly. There were no immediate reliable figures to provide a possible breakdown of seats.

But the shock of the night came from the Ukrainian nationalist Svoboda (Freedom) party which exit polls said took about 12 percent of the party list voting, assuring it of representation in parliament for the first time.

The strong showing by Svoboda - which is based in the Ukrainian-speaking west and occupies the opposite end of the political spectrum to the Regions - boosted opposition ranks, weakened by the jailing of Yanukovich's rival, Yulia Tymoshenko.

The other new wild card in the forthcoming parliament was that of Klitschko's UDAR (Punch) party which was in third place behind the Regions and the united opposition which includes Tymoshenko's Batkivschyna (Fatherland), according to the exit polls.

Victory by the Regions is certain to cement the leadership of Yanukovich, who comes up for re-election in 2015 and whose rule has been marked by an accumulation of presidential powers and antagonism with the West over Tymoshenko's imprisonment.

Tymoshenko, the country's most vibrant opposition figure, was jailed for seven years last year for abuse of office relating to a 2009 gas deal with Russia which she made when she was prime minister. The Yanukovich government says the agreement saddled Ukraine with an enormous price for gas supplies.

The former Soviet republic of 46 million, a major exporter of steel and grain, is more isolated politically on the international stage than it has been for years. Apart from being at odds with the United States and the European Union over Tymoshenko, Ukraine does not see eye to eye with Russia which has turned a deaf ear to Kiev's calls for cheaper gas.

At home, the government is also blamed for failing to stamp out corruption and has backed off from painful reforms that could secure much-needed IMF lending to shore up its export-driven economy.

OBSERVERS' VERDICT

Though these three opposition parties appeared to have won roughly half of the vote on party lists, they were not expected to fare as well in the single-mandate constituencies, results of which will only begin to emerge on Monday.

Borys Kolesnikov, a deputy prime minister, said he foresaw the Regions picking up two thirds of these individual districts.

"The exit poll data speaks for itself. It is clear the Party of the Regions has won ... These elections signal confidence in the President's policies," Prime Minister Mykola Azarov told journalists.

With the West seeing the poll as a test of Ukraine's commitment to democracy after Tymoshenko's imprisonment, interest will focus on the judgment which observers from the OSCE European security and human rights body will hand down on Monday.

Arseny Yatsenyuk, head of the united opposition in the absence of Tymoshenko, said: "The exit poll results have shown that the people of Ukraine support the opposition and not the government."

If the exit polls are proven accurate, Klitschko, the WBC heavyweight boxing champion, will now enter parliament at the head of his new party after a campaign in which he has been critical of corruption and cronyism under Yanukovich's rule.

He says his party will team up with Yatsenyuk and other members of the opposition, including Svoboda, though his refusal to join a pre-election coalition engendered suspicion.

"We do not foresee any joint work with the Party of the Regions and its communist satellite. We are ready to work with those political parties which propose a European path of development," Klitschko told journalists.

But it was the showing of Svoboda, which pursues a strong Ukrainian nationalist agenda and opposes attempts by the Regions to promote the Russian language over Ukrainian, which caught attention on the night.

Svoboda leader Oleh Tyahnybok, a 43-year-old surgeon, pledged to stick by a pre-election agreement and work with Yatsenyuk and other opposition leaders in the new parliament.

He appealed to Klitschko to formally join the united opposition. "We can only hope that, having looked at the situation which has emerged, Vitaly Klitschko will unite with us," he said in televised comments.

"Svoboda is the biggest sensation," said political analyst Volodymyr Fesenko of the Penta think tank. "The Ukrainian political borsch (soup) has got a bit more spicy. There will be more pepper but how it is going to taste is another question," he said.

Fesenko added that he saw the vote for Svoboda as reflecting a protest against the political establishment.

How would you change Jawbones Big Jambox

In the ever-shrinking world of tech, for a company to release a jumbo-sized variant of a product is something of a novelty. Jawbone's Big Jambox has taken a few courses of steroids, with natty design language and 15-plus hours of battery life. We were certainly fans of the unit, although its audio can get a bit on the shaky side when you turn it up to 11, but that was just in the confines of our review. What's it been like to use this thing on a regular basis for the last six months? We're asking you to place yourselves in the stylish shoes of designer Yves Behar and tell us what you'd have done differently.
