Obama shields US airlines from EU carbon fees

18 hrs.

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama signed a bill on Tuesday shielding U.S. airlines from paying for each ton of carbon their planes emit flying into and out of Europe, despite a recent move by Europe to suspend its proposed measure for one year.

The carbon fee bill was the first piece of legislation debated on the House floor after Congress returned from recess on November 13, and had been cleared by the Senate in September in a rare unanimous vote.

It directs the U.S. transportation secretary to shield U.S. airlines from Europe's carbon emissions trading scheme (ETS) if he or she deems it necessary.

Lawyers have said the bill is unusual because it would prevent U.S. companies from complying with the laws of another country.

"The Obama administration is firmly committed to reducing harmful carbon pollution from civil aviation both domestically and internationally, but, as we have said on many occasions, the application of the EU ETS to non-EU air carriers is the wrong way to achieve that objective," Clark Stevens, a White House spokesman, said.

He added that the administration is focused on making progress toward a global solution to reduce emissions under the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the U.N. body that deals with aviation issues.

The U.S. airline industry's main lobbying group, Airlines for America, praised Obama and said it, too, favored working through the ICAO to solve the problem. The group estimated that complying with the EU law would have cost U.S. airlines $3.1 billion between now and 2020.

"It never made a bit of sense for European governments to tax our citizens for flying over our own airspace ? and with the passage of this law we've got the tools we need to prevent it from happening and protect American jobs," said Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill, a co-author of the bill.

The House passed the bill despite a November 12 announcement that the European Union would "stop the clock" on enforcing its law for one year.

The European Commission said it would delay the application of its law to give ICAO enough time to craft a global framework to address emissions before the next assembly of all 190 members next autumn.

McCaskill and co-sponsor Republican Senator John Thune said in a statement that their bill had pressured the EU into delaying the enforcement of their cap-and-trade scheme for aviation.

The EU had also been under pressure from China, one of the world's fastest growing markets for aircraft, which had threatened to cancel orders of European Airbus aircraft if the EU did not back down from applying its ETS on all airlines.

One EU official took to the social networking site Twitter to suggest that United States was not making good on suggestions for "greener" policies.

Obama made reference to climate change as one of a trio of issues facing the country in his victory speech after being re-elected on November 6.

"So far the reelected President Obama climate policies look EXACTLY as in first term. Wonder when we'll see the announced change?" Connie Hedegaard, EU Climate Change Commissioner, said in a tweet.

Green groups criticized Obama for signing the anti-ETS law as one of his first post-election acts but said the administration has the opportunity to back a global solution under ICAO.

"The White House now must endorse a global, market-based measure to rein in carbon pollution from aviation," said World Wildlife Fund's Keya Chatterjee.

Why does it seem that agents are scared of clients interviewing other ...

It has confounded me for some time, since we had our start in 1998 with REMAX. Why it is that agents are scared to talk about interviewing multiple real estate agents before choosing one? What could be the reason for this? Could it be insecurity rearing it?s ugly head? What about not having the ?competitive spirit??

I know this hits some Santa Clarita real estate agents like a fart in Church, but it is a necessary step to anyone buying or selling a home. It is necessary for you to interview multiple agents. I?ll throw selfish at you now, ?I hope we are one of those you interview?? However, I get it if we are not, you may walk into that first office of that first Top Producing Real Estate agent and be swooned off of your feet ? it happens.

But for the other 99.9% of you, put us down as one of the Real Estate agents you want to interview and question. When it comes to buying or selling a home there have been studies done by the Big Syndication websites about how the buyers/sellers felt of their agent. Here is the break down:

70% said they would not recommend the realtor they choose to friends or family.

What a statement. There was another fact that reared it?s head in this Feedback forum for Real Estate. That was the fact most people work with 7 agents before buying a home.

So, 70% of those that bought a home did not like their agent enough to recommend them and most of those buyers work with 7 agents before buying a home.

It seems that someone is asleep at the Santa Clarita real estate wheel? I think it comes down to this, some agents are afraid of answering the phone or picking up the phone and calling back. Most agents are scared to say something is wrong. Most are terrified to give the ?bad and unpleasant? scenarios that apply when buying a home. Some agents will even close a real estate transaction if their buyer or seller are placing themselves at risk.

Do some Googleing, look at Bing ? run some real estate keywords in the search engines related to real estate. See who comes up in the SERP?s ? Search engine result pages. Weed out the real estate syndication websites and focus on the local real estate agents websites. Click through on a few that are on the first page and start making your calls. BTW ? if there is no phone number or physical ?local address? for the real estate agent on their website?s home page ? move onto the next.

Select Text for Quick Blockquotes in Gmail RepliesIf you're an avid Gmail user you know that when you're replying to a long email it's easy for the context to get lost. Blogger John Graham-Cumming points out that, like many other email programs, Gmail has the handy feature where you can select a block of text, hit reply, and only that text is quoted in the response.

Instead of simply hitting reply to an email, select the block of text you're specifically replying to, and then hit reply. Only the block of text you selected is quoted in the reply email, which cuts down on all the junk text you get in long email chains. Most email programs have this built in?and this has been in Gmail for a while?but it's a handy tip nonetheless.

Elements Used When selecting Real estate property

by GuestAuthor on November 25, 2012

Property is one area that numerous people sooo want to personal. It is made in many forms, nevertheless is usually split into three primary groups. The initial category can be residential property. This really is house exactly where men and women are living. It can include homes throughout local communities or upon significant packages of land. The 2nd classification is farmland. This is actually the type of property that producers seek out to buy in an effort to expand. The last group is commercial property. Here is the kind of real estate property which is used with regard to company uses. It is employed for all sorts of corporations which includes shops, producers and also workplaces. Each time a particular person chooses to get all of these types, this person possibly already has an idea of which kind she or he is seeking. Although they may have heard the type, they've already other factors that they'll employ to make certain that they will purchase the correct for their requirements.

The first thing that concerns is the location. People don't simply go and buy real-estate in any location where it really is offered. Instead, they've a perception of in which they really want so that it is. They own that refined into a certain state. Organizations might make this happen because of the advantages a specific state delivers with regard to organization purposes. Other individuals may choose a specific city or even region within a city. The issues people have for selecting these kind of locations are all very different, but a majority of of these contain reasons concerning his or her work in order to the faculties in your neighborhood. Children might choose to proceed to a town mainly because the faculties in that section work best from the total state. If it is something that is essential into a family, this can be an issue that they can search for. Other people search for regions which may have reduced crime prices, since they need to keep their children secure.

More features regarding real estate affecting choices include the price tag along with the measurement or even popular features of this residence. If you are intending out there looking for a residence, you do not find the initial property the truth is as well as read about. You will truly talk to a realtor generally, and also the agent will allow you to get the house that matches your requirements. The particular realtor can define this list involving houses in the specific community or place to a smaller listing made up of homes which meet your conditions. As an example, in order to partner site stay with investing in a residence that is certainly around $200,500, your realtor may compile a listing of houses that exist this price tag. Your own broker will endeavour to find the houses that she or he considers you will such as for the reason that agent is likely to make a new commission if the get a residence. The same thing applies for people acquiring real estate. A real estate agent or perhaps dealer can help the person obtain the house that is certainly what the body's searching for and definately will show these types of components to him or her.

Health and environmental risk in flame retardants in building insulation

ScienceDaily (Nov. 23, 2012) ? Researchers in the United States are calling for a change to the US building codes, following a study showing that the mandatory flame retardants routinely added to foam insulation are not only harmful to human health and the environment, but also make no difference to the prevention of fire in buildings where a fire-safe thermal barrier already exists. Such a change would bring the US building codes in line with regulations in Sweden and Norway.

The research team, which is drawn from US-based centres of excellence including the University of California and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, conducted a thorough review of fire safety literature since the mid-1970s and conclude that the addition of halogenated organic compounds to plastic insulation materials such as polystyrene, polyisocyanurate and polyurethane is costly, ineffective and environmentally damaging. Their conclusions are published in the latest issue of the journal Building Research and Information.

Led by internationally renowned fire expert Dr Vytenis Babrauskas of Fire Science & Technology Inc., the research team investigated the impact of the "Steiner Tunnel test," which is used to test the propagation of fire over the surface of all sorts of building materials in the early stages of fire (before flashover point is reached). Their paper suggests that changing the US building codes to exempt foam plastic insulation materials from the test would avoid the use of thousands of tonnes of flame retardants that are known or suspected to be persistent organic pollutants. They conclude:

"Such a change would ? decrease the cost of foam plastic insulation and encourage the use of insulation materials for increasing building energy efficiency and mitigating climate change. The potential for health and ecological harm from the use of flame retardant chemicals would be reduced and the fire safety of buildings would be maintained.

The Steiner Tunnel test, showing the flame being applied to the ceiling, is an inadequate and inappropriate method for testing insulation safety. Photo: IntertekTesting Services Inc.

Their article begins with a review of the development of the US building codes in relation to fire safety, and foam insulation in particular, and explains that foam plastics used for insulation have required a thermal barrier (usually 12.7 mm (1/2 inch) thick gypsum wallboard) since 1976. In addition, chemicals such as hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) and Tris (1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCPP) are routinely added in order to meet the requirements of the Steiner Tunnel test. The building codes have never stipulated that chemicals be added to foam plastic insulation, however doing so is the most common way to meet the Steiner test. These additives are semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) which do not bind to the insulation material and are known to be released into the environment throughout the life cycle of insulation. The chemicals can persist and accumulate, and have been implicated in thyroid hormone disruption and nervous system development problems and are potentially carcinogenic.

The experts suggest that exempting foam plastic insulation materials from the Steiner Tunnel test would mean there was no longer a need to add these flame retardants.

As well as presenting a detailed analysis of the problems associated with the Steiner Tunnel test, the article reviews the:

? Adequacy of the thermal barrier

? Fire propagation into a cavity constructed in violation of codes

? Behaviour of exposed foam insulation installed in violation of codes.

The article also discusses alternative courses of action, including the possible development of a more accurate test, the use of different flame retardant chemicals and a range of options for mitigating the impact of the flame retardants currently used.

Finally, the article says that such an action would not be without precedent. Flame retardants were once routinely added to children's pajamas, but their use was discontinued in many regions after a range of adverse environmental and health impacts were identified. Dr Babrauskas and his team conclude that, in the light of their evidence, an equivalent volte-face should be implemented in the US building codes as soon as possible. They also recommend a root and branch review of the process of designing fire standards and building codes, in particular to ensure that fire scientists, building code officials and other regulators consider the efficacy, life cycle, health and ecological impacts of building materials.

Our History: Why Our Nonprofit Work to Save the Orangutan ? Small ...

Over the last decade the wild orangutan population has decreased 50% due to habitat loss. The Orangutan Protection Foundation (OPF) is a nonprofit environmental foundation organization located in Balikpapan, Indonesia. OPF is active in many fields. The main goal of the organization is to protect orangutans and the natural habitat they live in. The wild orangutan is at risk of becoming extinct. Wild orangutans live in Indonesia and Malaysia. The number of wild orangutans is decreasing rapidly every year.

OPF Foundation was founded in 1991 in Balikpapan, Indonesia as the Balikpapan Orangutan Society by Dr. Willie Smits. Dr. Smits, an ecologist and advisor to the Minister of Forestry in Indonesia, found a sick baby orangutan in the market in Balikpapan. Dr. Smits managed to care for the sick orangutan and was then given another. In 14 years, OPF has grown into a recognized foundation in Indonesia with sister organizations in 11 other countries.

Orangutans are unique, highly intelligent animals that share 97% of their DNA with humans. The orangutan is the largest living tree mammal in the world. They spend most of their lives living in trees, building nests each night to sleep at the top of trees.

New 3-D movie technology: are viewers ready?

    14 hrs.

When the?3-D version of "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" debuts in movie theaters on Dec.?14, the film will likely wow viewers with its special effects. But audiences at select theaters will get even more bang for their buck: they?ll be the first to witness a new technology that displays images at a rate of 48 frames per second, twice as fast as the current standard.

The new display rate is sure to look different. Whether audiences will like it is less certain. So far, early reviews have been mixed, according to 3D Focus, a website that tracks changes in 3-D-viewing technology.?

BLOG: Is 3-D vision bad for you??

Some people think the effects look "too real." For others, eyestrain, headaches, nausea and other discomforts are as much of a hazard as they were with the older technologies. That's because most films that are designed to make images look like they are popping out of the screen work by showing each eye different pictures at different times. That forces the brain to merge conflicting messages -- an obstacle that 3-D studios are still working to overcome.

"People really differ," said Marty Banks, a vision scientist at the University of California, Berkeley. "Some people just don't get it and they're fine. Other people are fairly uncomfortable. The industry is really worried about this. They're listening to us?scientists and they?re taking our advice."

ll movies, whether "2-D" or "3-D" create the illusion of movement by flashing one still image after another onto the screen at a rate that is fast enough to fool our brains into seeing action. If the sequence of images is presented too slowly, the result is a shaky effect called "judder" that can sometimes look like a double image.

3-D technology (which Banks prefers to call stereo-3-D or S3-D because even "2-D" movies look three-dimensional) raises the risk for judder because these films usually show screen shots in an alternating sequence to one eye at a time. First the left eye sees an image, then the right eye sees one, then the left eye sees the next image, and so on.

With the latest generation of 3-D glasses, polarizing filters allow each eye to see light coming from just one direction, and screen shots are displayed so that a single lens is targeted at a time. When one eye is stimulated, the other eye is presented with darkness.

It's up to the brain to put everything together into a coherent picture. But with each eye seeing alternating flashes of brightness and darkness, jumpy judder can creep in, causing distraction or discomfort.

BLOG: Sony?s 3-D digital recording binoculars

To solve that problem, 3-D films that are shot at a standard 24 frames per second actually show the left eye a single image three times in a row with flashes of darkness in between. Then the right eye gets its image three times in a row, and that pattern continues for the entire film. This "triple flashing" allows the screen to display 72 frames per second, which reduces flicker effects.

For the new Hobbit, director Peter Jackson used new technology to film at 48 frames per second instead of 24. In real life, our visual systems take in information continuously, and some experts speculate that images will need to be captured at more than 100 or even 150 frames per second before a movie looks truly real. But with any increase in frame-rate speed, motion should look smoother and more realistic.

"As you increase the rate of new incoming data, you're getting closer and closer to the real world," Banks said. "At some rate, you will get to the point where you can?t tell the difference."

But first, moviemakers have some technical issues to deal with.

One question, Engle said, is whether the technological limitations of the projectors used by most theaters will require them to use fewer flashes for each eye before switching to the other eye?s image????a switch that could actually cause new stuttering problems.

NEWS: Underwater movie maker: Shaun MacGillivray

Some theaters use a dual-projector set-up that gets around that issue by showing images to both eyes at the same time, and in those cases, Engle said, the results should be spectacular. But theaters that use a single projector to display 3-D movies will have some new decisions to make, and audiences might not be universally happy about the final product.

"You have to be careful what you wish for," said Rob Engle, 3-D supervisor at a major film studio in Burbank, Calif. "If you have to make compromises in order to increase the frame rate by decreasing the flash rate, you start to run into trade-offs."

As higher frame rates lead to more realism, dismay is also cropping up among people who are used to seeing films that look like films rather than television or real life. Similar complaints have emerged whenever filmmaking technology has risen to a new level over the decades.

"Every time we've moved closer to reality by adding sound, adding color or getting rid of scratches, in the end, the audience has accepted it and there's no going back," Banks said. "I think the same is going to be true here.

"In the end, we all want immersion. We want to feel like we're in that scene and closer to reality. I think once people see it, they are going to go, 'Wow. I want that.'"

The faraway islands in Western Papua, regarded by many marine experts as having the potential to help restore the world's ailing coral reefs, are vulnerable to the unchecked exploitation of a lucrative treasure that is rapidly disappearing from Indonesia's waters: sharks.

China's growing appetite for the de rigueur shark fin soup has attracted fishermen from elsewhere in Indonesia and Southeast Asia to the waters around Raja Ampat's 1,500 islands.

Alarmed, conservationists and local villagers worked together to create the Misool Eco Resort and Conservation Center in 2005, establishing a 165-square-mile "No-Take Zone" that banned fishing.

When a neighboring village requested to take part, the area was expanded to 472 square miles, roughly the size of the city of Los Angeles.

The Misool team also recruited a group of rangers to help patrol the waters for illegal fishermen. Earlier this year, NBC News had an opportunity to go on patrol with Abdul Razak Tamher, 31, one of the first rangers.

Q: Before 2005, what were shark and fish stocks like in this area of Raja Ampat?

A: Before 2005, one of the main occupations of the people of my village was fishing. That's what we did every day and one of the big things fished were sharks. By the 2000s there were very few sharks left in the area, but in the 1980s and 90s when I was fishing there were lots of sharks. A lot of people used dynamite and potassium cyanide for fishing.

Q: So did villagers in Misool know they had to change the way things were done?

A: At that time, people here really didn't think much about shark or marine conservation. We didn't know shark fishing was illegal (prior to the formation of the No-Take Zone in 2005, the local governor had actually signed a law against shark fishing) because nobody from the government came out here to tell or educate us that it was illegal and bad for the ecology to fish sharks.

It was really through the efforts of the resort to educate the village about the importance of sharks and protecting the marine environment that we saw the importance of it and began to appreciate the natural beauty ourselves. Now if people from my village hear of a shark fishing boat coming into this area, they get really upset.

NBC News' Richard Engel talks to a Conservation International scientist as he identifies a new species of fish.

Q: Is conservation a completely foreign idea here? Isn't there a long tradition of seasonal fishing and spiritual beliefs around protecting certain animals?

A:?We've embraced principles of conservation since the beginning of our culture. They were simple ideas, but they still worked for us. For example, we would harvest clams from the ocean for six months, then depending on the ocean conditions, we would close that area for sometimes up to a year before harvesting again.

Many of the original families in this area are forbidden to eat different sea creatures like sharks or turtles or other kinds of fish. In each case, there is a reason why each family respects and protects a certain animal. It could be that a family member or fisherman generations ago was rescued by that species or guided to land at a time of need. Many still believe that if someone in the family breaks this taboo, they will get sick or something bad will happen.

Q:?In 2006, the rangers were formed with just five of you and a few of you were actually former shark fishermen. What made you make such a dramatic change in your life?

?A:?I personally wasn't involved in shark fishing, but other original rangers that were here in the beginning and their village elders were shark fishermen. Even though they were shark fishermen and lived off the harvest of the ocean, they realized that they needed to preserve this area and the marine life for future generations to come.

Many of us felt ? and still feel today ? that if we told our children or grandchildren that there were lots of fish and sharks in the sea around these islands and they went there and saw none they would think that we were liars and we just couldn't allow that to happen.

Q:?What was it like in the early days with the rangers?

A:?The rangers weren't really effective until 2009 because at that time there was only one speed boat that was always busy getting lumber for the construction of the resort. So we would only go out if we saw an illegal boat go past the resort. From 2006-2009, we went out almost every day. In the months of June and July, the area was choked with shark finning boats from as far away as Java that cast long lines with sometimes 1,000 or 2,000 hooks to catch sharks.

To expel the foreign boats, it wasn't a problem. We would just go up to the boats and tell them leave and they would go. Local fishermen were tougher. Most of the problems had to do with local fishermen not agreeing with the contract we signed with Misool Eco Reserve to create the no-take zones or claiming they were not around when the contract had been reached. They would also say we have it easy since we work as rangers and make a lot of money, so we don't need to fish like they did.

Q:?How soon after the reserve formed did you start to see results from the sanctuary?

A:?After two or three years, I started to see a lot of sharks in the lagoons and my friends who went diving began to see more fish. There were just some researchers here in Misool who were shocked by the amount of fish who were in the protected areas. The results have just been amazing.

Q:?How have the villages in the area adapted to the sanctuary?

A:?In the beginning, there were a lot of problems with the villagers not understanding the rangers' mission. The most important thing we did to get people behind us was to use Adat, or traditional Papuan village law. This was done by developing a close relationship with the ancestral village head, as he holds the power of the village and so people will listen to what he says. If we didn't have the village head, then it would have been difficult to enforce the rules of the sanctuary.

Q:?What's next for the rangers in the coming years?

A:?We all hope the ranger patrol can continue forever and that we have the resources to keep recruiting young people from the villages to the patrol. We now have three ranger stations built and we hope to have three rangers in every station with small, fuel-efficient boats that can be used to spot illegal fishermen and intercept them until support can show up.

The other big problem we'd like to fix is communication. Radio communication in this region of Raja Ampat is difficult because all the radios we have now are line-of-sight and the islands interfere with signal within short distances. The plan is to build a main radio/repeater station that will cover the entire area so that there is clear contact throughout the sanctuary.

How Can I Tell If My Horse Has Worms?

Worms can cause a serious threat to the overall well-being of your horse and therefore it?s beneficial for you to become aware of the outward symptoms that may point towards the signs of worms in order to implement a successful horse wormersprogramme.

    Weight

It?s important that you weigh your horse on a regular basis. If worms are present in your horse then they will absorb many of the nutrients that the horse is taking in from its feed. So, if your horse is losing weight, or failing to gain weight from increased grain, then this is one of the main symptoms that worms are present and a visit from the vet may be in order.

    Coat

The simplest way of determining the presence of worms is to look at the horse?s coat. If it is dull and lifeless, or patchy in places, then the nutrients from the horse?s grain are not being digested properly and are not stimulating healthy hair growth.

    Stool

If these symptoms are evident then the next step is to either examine the horse?s stool. If the stool is continually loose then this points towards a digestive tract that is being tampered with by worms. Upon closer inspection it may be possible to identify the presence of worms in the stool sample itself. However, for a more definitive diagnosis, taking a stool sample to your vet will help to identify the types of worms present and the extent to which the horse is infected.

Before you spend a lot of money on vet?s fees, these three simple steps of monitoring the horses weight, coat and stools will help you to determine the problem if you suspect the presence of worms. Indeed, these are the common symptoms of worms in any animal, such as a cat or a dog, so it is worth bearing these signs in mind before embarking on a trip to the vets.

    Treating Worms

The good news is that, whilst worms are a common problem in horses, the treatment of worms is a straight forward and relatively inexpensive process. Some of the cheapest horse wormers available are combination wormers that offer protection against a variety of parasitical strains. Something like an equestpramox year pack, for example, offers a worming plan that will cover your horse for the duration of the year and is widely available for around ?70, although discounts maybe found through companies that specialise in wormers online.

Whilst the thought of worms in any animal is rather off putting the treatment is always cheap and simple. Domestic pet wormers, such as Drontal for cats or Drontal Plus for dogs, offer protection in the home environment, whereas more industrial strength products such as equimax horse wormer and equest horse wormer offer protection for your horse.

There are a variety of different horse wormers available on the market designed to combat worms in all their stages and forms.

Gaza crowds surge at Israel border fence, 1 dead

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) ? Israeli troops fired on Gazans surging toward Israel's border fence Friday, killing one person but leaving intact the fragile two-day-old cease-fire between Hamas and the Jewish state.

The truce, which calls for an end to Gaza rocket fire on Israel and Israeli airstrikes on Gaza, came after eight days of cross-border fighting, the bloodiest between Israel and Hamas in four years.

In a letter to the U.N. Security Council, the Palestinian U.N. observer Riyad Mansour called the situation in Gaza "extremely fragile" and said Israel's cease-fire violations and other illegal actions risk undermining the calm that was just restored.

Hundreds of Palestinians approached the border fence Friday in several locations in southern Gaza, testing expectations Israel would no longer enforce a 300-meter-wide (300-yard-wide) no-go zone on the Palestinian side of the fence that was meant to prevent infiltrations into Israel. In the past, Israeli soldiers routinely opened fire on those who crossed into the zone.

In one incident captured by Associated Press video, several dozen Palestinians, most of them young men, approached the fence, coming close to a group of Israeli soldiers standing on the other side.

Some Palestinians briefly talked to the soldiers, while others appeared to be taunting them with chants of "God is Great" and "Morsi, Morsi," in praise of Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi, whose mediation led to the truce.

At one point, a soldier shouted in Hebrew, "Go there, before I shoot you," and pointed away from the fence, toward Gaza. The soldier then dropped to one knee, assuming a firing position. Eventually, a burst of automatic fire was heard, but it was not clear whether any of the casualties were from this incident.

Gaza health official Ashraf al-Kidra said a 20-year-old man was killed and 19 people were wounded by Israeli fire near the border.

Mansour, the Palestinian U.N. observer, said Israeli forces fatally shot Anwar Abdulhadi Qudaih in the head and injured at least 19 other Palestinian civilians in a border area east of Khan Younis.

During the incidents, Hamas security tried to defuse the situation and keep the crowds away from the fence.

Moussa Abu Marzouk, a top Hamas official at the ongoing negotiations in Cairo, told The Associated Press that the violence would have no effect on the ceasefire.

The crowds were mainly made up of young men but also included farmers hoping to once again farm lands in the buffer zone. Speaking by phone from the buffer zone, 19-year-old Ali Abu Taimah said he and his father were checking three acres of family land that have been fallow for several years.

"When we go to our land, we are telling the occupation (Israel) that we are not afraid at all," he said.

Israel's military said roughly 300 Palestinians approached the security fence at different points, tried to damage it and cross into Israel. Soldiers fired warning shots in the air, but after the Palestinians refused to move back, troops fired at their legs, the military said. A Palestinian infiltrated into Israel during the unrest, but was returned to Gaza, it said.

The truce allowed both Hamas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to step back from the brink of a full-fledged war. Over eight days, Israel's aircraft carried out some 1,500 strikes on Hamas-linked targets, while Gaza fighters fired roughly the same number of rockets at Israel.

The fighting killed 166 Palestinians, including scores of civilians, and six Israelis. Mansour, the Palestinian U.N. envoy, said more than 1,230 Palestinians were injured, predominantly women and children.

In Cairo, Egypt is hosting separate talks with Israeli and Hamas envoys on the next phase of the cease-fire ? a new border deal for blockaded Gaza. Hamas demands an end to border restrictions, while Israel insists Hamas halt weapons smuggling to Gaza.

Mansour also accused Israel of intensifying its use of "excessive and lethal force" against Palestinian civilians in the West Bank and East Jerusalem in recent days and of arresting at least 230 Palestinian civilians since the Gaza fighting began, including several members of the Palestinian Legislative Council who were detained at dawn Friday.

The Palestinian U.N. observer called on the Security Council and the international community "to remain vigilant in their demands for a complete cessation of hostilities and for compliance by Israel."

A poll Friday showed about half of Israelis thinks their government should have continued its Gaza offensive.

The independent Maagar Mohot poll showed 49 percent of respondents felt Israel should have kept pursuing squads that fire rockets into Israel, 31 percent supported the decision to stop and 20 percent had no opinion. Twenty-nine percent thought Israel should have sent ground troops into Gaza. The poll of 503 respondents had an error margin of 4.5 percentage points.

The same survey showed Netanyahu's Likud Party and electoral partner Israel Beiteinu losing some support, but his hard-line bloc was still favored to form the next government after Jan. 22 elections.

What I Learned About Black Friday | Buckeyes Blog

? Bound By Love | Home

    By Ana | November 23, 2012

It?s a bit of a tradition for two old friends and I to get together in the wee hours of the morning on Black Friday and head to the stores to people watch. While we?ve never personally witnessed any rioting, trampling, or violence, we have seen nasty words exchanged between irate and frantic shoppers.

This year, something happened to change my perception of this entire phenomenon. We found ourselves at Target around 3:30 this morning, and strolled around browsing, observing people and decorations, and chatting. One of my friends found peppermint chapstick and hot cocoa, and I happened to find a Leo DiCaprio DVD and little day planner for 2013. We were all getting tired, and since the crowds had thinned, there wasn?t much left to watch, so we headed to the checkout.

The register I was directed to was staffed by a developmentally disabled young man.? My dad is a health care provider for individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities, and growing up I had many opportunities to go to work with him, and get to know the people he works with. Some people feel uncomfortable around people with intellectual or developmental disabilities, but I?ve never been one of them. Dad taught my sisters and I to treat people with intellectual and developmental disabilities just as you would anyone else?with respect, politeness, and dignity.

The young man greeted me, and asked how I was doing as he began to ring up my items. ?Good,? I said. ?How are you doing tonight??

?Not good,? he replied. At once I felt like an idiot. Of course not good, Ana. It?s almost 4 am on Black Friday! And he has been working and probably dealing with tons of rude people. ?I?m sorry,? I said, ?I hope it gets better. It must have been??

?I?m not good. I?m great!? he said, beaming at me, before I could finish saying it must have been very busy this evening.

?Oh, well that?s wonderful?? I began again, but then he asked, ?Do you know why I?m great??

I told him I didn?t know, to which he said with a huge smile: ?Because you?re here!?

I don?t know if there are even words to express how much my heart just melted at that moment. He?d probably been working for hours. He probably hadn?t even had a full Thanksgiving Day with his family, and he probably missed seeing Thanksgiving football on TV, and he probably hadn?t had time for a post-turkey nap after dinner before work, and what if there wasn?t any leftover pie when he got home later today? I don?t know why I thought of that, but I did, and it made me terribly sad. And here he was, making my day with something so simple as a few kind words.

I just couldn?t even process it. As I took my bag and left, I smiled and wished him a Happy Thanksgiving, even though it was technically over, I guess. With that same big smile, he told me to have a great day. Then I got back into my car to wait for my friends and just cried and cried. I couldn?t really tell you why?it?s pretty unlike me. But maybe he was a reminder I really needed of how honestly wonderful people can be.

I think that?s so easy to forget this time of year. I like the holidays, of course, but I?ve always been pretty cynical. Most of the time they seem more work and stress and cost than they?re worth. I run around like a chicken with my head cut off trying to help my parents entertain guests and serve a Emeril-worthy meal and use the fancy dishes and it just doesn?t feel worth it. But this year suddenly feels a little different.

I never caught that young man?s name, but I?ll remember what he taught me today?that even in the midst of the hectic craziness of this time of year, there is always time to be kind to people, and that is more valuable than anything you can buy on Black Friday.
