Pritzker family business founder dies at 85 (AP)

CHICAGO ? Businessman Robert Pritzker, who led a global industrial conglomerate and whose family founded the Hyatt chain of hotels, has died. He was 85.

Pritzker died Thursday evening in a Chicago nursing facility after suffering from Parkinson's disease, his executive assistant Becky Spooner said Friday.

Pritzker founded and was chairman and president of the Marmon Group, an international conglomerate of manufacturing and service companies. His business acumen helped Marmon Group revenues grow into the billions of dollars and through hundreds of acquisitions over 50 years, company officials said. The company was sold to Berkshire Hathaway in 2008.

In 2002, at age 76, Pritzker acquired several caster, medical device and hardware companies to form Colson Associates.

Pritzker was the brother of Jay Pritzker, who was founder and chairman of the Hyatt Hotel chain and among the richest people in the United States when he died in 1999 in Chicago.

Pritzker was born in Chicago on June 30, 1926. He graduated from the Illinois Institute of Technology with an industrial engineering degree in 1946 and later became chairman of the school's board of trustees. The school now has a Pritzker Institute for Medical Engineering.

Throughout his career Pritzker taught management and engineering courses at IIT, the University of Chicago and Oxford University. He also was chairman of the National Association of Manufacturers and worked with the National Academy of Engineering.

Pritzker is survived by his wife, Mayari, five children, 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Andrea Moton And Sherry West Plead Guilty In 'House Of Horrors' Scissor Murders

Two former workers at a southeast Pennsylvania abortion clinic referred to as a "House of Horrors" pleaded guilty Thursday to third-degree murder. The charges stem from the deaths of a patient and seven babies who were born alive and then killed with scissors.

Andrea Moton, 34, of Upper Darby, admitted guilt in the slaying of a late-term baby that a patient had delivered into a toilet at the Women's Medical Society in West Philidelphia.

"The baby was moving and looked like it was swimming," the grand jury report reads. "Moton reached into the toilet, got the baby out and cut its [spinal cord]."

Sherry West, 52, of Newark, Del., pleaded guilty in the February 2009 death of Karnamaya Mongar. A 41-year-old immigrant from Nepal, Mongar died of a fatal drug overdose that was allegedly administered during an abortion at the clinic.

The facility where the women worked -- an abortion clinic the grand jury called an "abortion mill" and Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams referred to as a "house of horrors" -- was operated by Dr. Kermit Gosnell, 70. According to prosecutors, the clinic catered to mostly poor, minority and immigrant women.

On Feb. 18, 2010, the FBI and detectives from the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office executed search warrants at the clinic as part of an investigation into illegal prescription drug activity. What investigators found inside proved to be far more troubling.

"Bags and bottles holding aborted fetuses were scattered throughout the building," Williams said during a January news conference. "A row of jars containing severed feet lined a shelf. Furniture and equipment was dusty, broken, [and] urine- and blood-stained. Untrained, unsupervised workers injected dangerous drugs into women undergoing illegal late-term abortions."

During the course of the drug-trafficking investigation, the district attorney's office learned about Mongar's death. They also discovered Gosnell and members of his staff allegedly performed abortions beyond the 24-week limit prescribed by law.

Prosecutors said Gosnell, a family physician, was not certified in obstetrics or gynecology.

"In case after case, Dr. Gosnell and his assistants induced labor; forced the live birth of viable babies in the sixth, seventh and eighth month of pregnancy; and then killed those babies by cutting into the back of their necks with scissors and severing their spinal cords," Williams said.

Gosnell, his wife and eight of the clinic workers were arrested in January, after the grand jury released the findings of its lengthy investigation into his clinic.

The abortion doctor faces charges of third-degree murder in the death of Mongar and seven murder charges for the deaths of infants killed "after being born viable." In addition to the murder charges, Gosnell faces charges of infanticide, conspiracy, abuse of a corpse and several other related offenses.

Neither Gosnell, who is being held on $2 million bail, nor his attorney has commented on the most recent developments. A gag order also prevents prosecutors from discussing the case.

In March, Gosnell denied any wrongdoing.

"I know that I have done my very best to provide the very best care to my patients," Gosnell told Philadelphia's Fox 29 WTXF.

Nevertheless, Gosnell, who also had a clinic in Delaware and a practice in New York, should have been caught long before the drug raid, the grand jury said in its findings. It placed partial blame on multiple agencies that allegedly ignored complaints about him and failed to visit or inspect his clinic since 1993.

According to the Pro-Life Union of Southeastern Pennsylvania, Gosnell performed an estimated 5,754 abortions between 2004 and 2008. Prosecutors allege he earned about $15,000 a day.

The grand jury also claims that complaints directly filed with various organizations -- some by attorneys who were representing patients of the clinic -- were not handled properly.

Gosnell has been named in more than three dozen civil suits going back 20 years. Of those, 10 are malpractice suits, the Fox News affiliate in Philadelphia reported.

According to Williams, Gosnell had "infected his patients with venereal diseases" and sent "woman after woman to the emergency room" with punctured uteri and intestines.

"We think the reason no one acted is because the women in question were poor and of color, because the victims were infants without identities, and because the subject was the political football of abortion," the grand jury said.

While the agencies named by the grand jury were not found to be criminally liable, the grand jury did recommend further regulations be enacted and additional hearings be held.

"If oversight agencies expect to prevent future Dr. Gosnells, they must find the fortitude to enact and enforce the necessary regulations," the grand jury stated. "Rules must be more than words on paper."

West, Moton and Elizabeth Hampton, a former clinic worker who pleaded guilty to a perjury charge on Thursday, are the first employees of the clinic to have their day in court. West and Moton now face more than 100 years behind bars. Seven others, including Gosnell, still face trial.

Terrorist attack outside US Embassy in Bosnia (AP)

SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina ? A man opened fire with an automatic weapon Friday in what authorities called a terrorist attack on the U.S. Embassy in Bosnia. A policeman and the gunman were wounded, but the embassy said none of its employees was hurt.

Sarajevo Mayor Alija Behmen said the gunman "got off a tram with a Kalashnikov and started shooting at the American Embassy." Witnesses told Bosnian television that the man urged pedestrians to move away, saying he was targeting only the embassy.

One police officer guarding the building was wounded before police surrounded the gunman. After a 30-minute standoff, the sound of a single shot echoed and AP video showed the shooter slump to the ground.

Police arrested the wounded man ? who one of Bosnia's three presidents said is a foreigner ? and took him away in an ambulance as pedestrians cowered behind buildings and vehicles. Hospital spokeswoman Biljana Jandric told The Associated Press the gunman had a minor wound to his leg, and would spend the night at the hospital before being released into police custody.

In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said several bullets struck the outside wall of the embassy, but that all embassy personnel were safe. She said the wounded police officer had been assigned to protect the embassy. Ambassador Patrick Moon expressed his gratitude for the swift response by the police.

"Our thoughts and prayers at this time are with those who put their lives on the line to protect the embassy," Nuland told reporters. Bakir Izetbegovic, one of Bosnia's three presidents, issued a statement condemning "the terrorist attack on the embassy of the United States."

"The United States is a proven friend of Bosnia-Herzegovina. Its government and its people supported us in the most difficult moments in our history and nobody has the right to jeopardize our relations," he said.

Zeljko Komsic, chairman of Bosnia's presidency, said the attacker is a foreigner previously known to police. He told AP that authorities have not yet determined whether the attack "was the act of an individual, or something organized."

"But whatever it was, it is not just an attack on the U.S. Embassy or the U.S., it is also an attack on Bosnia and Herzegovina," he said.

Bosnian Muslims are sensitive about their relations with the U.S. because it was the driving force behind the NATO military intervention and brokered a peace agreement that ended Bosnia's 1992-95 war.

The gunman was bearded and dressed in an outfit typical for followers of the conservative Wahhabi branch of Islam.

Bosnian TV identified the shooter as Mevlid Jasarevic, from Novi Pazar, Serbia. It said he is a Wahhabi follower, but did not cite its sources.

The Wahhabis are an extremely conservative branch of Islam which is rooted in Saudi Arabia and linked to religious militants in parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Magnitude-6.9 quake shakes Peru's coast

A magnitude-6.9 earthquake centered off Peru's central coast sent people running panicked into the streets Friday in cities badly damaged by a killer quake four years earlier. There were no reports of damage or injuries.

People who had lost loved ones and homes in the earlier quake were badly shaken and some broke into tears.

"It felt like the one in 2007 because it was very strong," Felix Sihuas told RPP radio. He said he was buried under rubble for six hours in the Aug. 15, 2007, quake, which killed 596 people and largely destroyed the town of Pisco.

Friday's quake was considerably less violent in Lima, a city of 8.5 million people. The capital shook for about 30 seconds in a series of moderate, swaying movements.

The U.S. Geological Survey said Friday's quake was centered 31 miles (51 kilometers) south-southwest of Ica, a provincial capital of about 200,00 people which suffered widespread damage in the 2007 quake. It was at a depth of 21.7 miles (35 kilometers).

Peru's government-run Institute of Geophysics put the quake's magnitude at 6.7 and put its depth at 19 miles (30 kilometers). The USGS said the killer 2007 quake was centered 24 miles (39 kilometers) deep.

A seismologist at the institute, Hernan Tavera, told RPP the 2007 quake released 33 times more energy than Friday's temblor but this time " the radius of action was far wider."

"There was panic, a lot of panic," said Ruben Vargas, a police official in Ica, which is flanked by asparagus fields and vineyards that produce wine and the liquor pisco.

Vargas said that many people were still in the streets nearly a half hour after the 1:54 p.m. (18:54 GMT) quake. "Little by little people are calming down but they're still outside their homes," he added.

In Pisco, police officer Julio Lopez said people were spooked though the quake wasn't nearly as bad as the 2007 temblor.

"It wasn't like the last time. It was shorter," said Jorge Luis Yupanqui, 30, from Pisco. "Some people started to cry."

About 40,000 homes were destroyed in the 2007 quake and the previous government of President Alan Garcia was widely criticized for the slow pace of reconstruction.

PFT: Week 8 picks: Eagles-Cowboys a tough call

Dallas Cowboys v Philadelphia EaglesGetty Images

Last week, Rosenthal and I disagreed on three games.? He was right on two of them, and I now trail by seven for the season.

To make matters worse, I was a pathetic 7-6.? He was 8-5.

To make matters even worse, there?s a chance it gets worse this weekend, with another 13 games.? At least he can only increase his lead to nine games, since we disagree on only two of them:? Bengals-Seahawks and Cowboys-Eagles.

For the year, he?s 71-32 and I?m 64-39.

Read on to see who we?ve picked and specifically how we disagree.? Given the choice of photo for this item, it?s safe to say I?ll be singing Fly, Eagles! Fly! on Sunday night.

Cardinals at Ravens

Florio?s take:? The Ravens play well at home.? The Ravens don?t play well against bad teams.? The Ravens are playing at home.? The Ravens are playing a bad team.? But the Cardinals are really bad, and the Ravens have gotten a kick in the pants after losing to the Jaguars.

Florio?s pick:? Ravens 31, Cardinals 17.

Rosenthal?s take: The Steelers struggled in the second half against the Jaguars two weeks ago, and took out their aggression on the Cardinals in Arizona. The Ravens lost to the Jaguars Monday night, and can take it out on the Cardinals in Baltimore. Passing game problems magically disappear when teams play Arizona.

Rosenthal?s pick: Ravens 31, Cardinals 13.

Vikings at Panthers

Florio?s take:? The Panthers have made it through a rough stretch of their schedule, and they have a chance to enter the bye on a two-game winning streak.? The Vikings have never won in Charlotte, and it?s unlikely that they?ll change that on Sunday.

Florio?s pick:? Panthers 28, Vikings 20.

Rosenthal?s take: It?s not really fair to Andy Dalton, Christian Ponder, and Blaine Gabbert to be rookies the same year as Cam Newton. The Panthers quarterback is starting to mix better decisions with his weekly ?wow? plays. Newton just doesn?t play like a rookie. He really doesn?t play like anyone that came before him.

Rosenthal?s pick: Panthers 33, Vikings 23.

Jaguars at Texans

Florio?s take:? The best of a bad crop of early games, this one got much more interesting after the Jaguars stunned the Ravens on Monday night.? Tied 9-9 all-time, the Texans can put a stranglehold on the AFC South with a win, and the Jaguars can make it interesting with an upset.? The edge goes to the home team.

Florio?s pick:? Texans 27, Jaguars 20.

Rosenthal?s take: If defense really wins championships, the Jaguars could be contenders. But Jacksonville needs something more from Blaine Gabbert, and teams need more in the gameplan than not turning the ball over. The Texans have a pretty decent defense, not to mention a guy named Arian Foster and a great run-blocking line.

Rosenthal?s pick: Texans 23, Jaguars 13.

Dolphins at Giants

Florio?s take:? The Dolphins return to MetLife Stadium only 13 days after being steamrolled by the Jets.? It wouldn?t be a shock if the Giants stub their toe, given their performance against the Seahawks.? But, c?mon, they?re playing the Dolphins.? The Matt Moore/J.P. Losman-led Dolphins.? A Miami win would be an even bigger upset than Super Bowl XLII.

Florio?s pick:? Giants 24, Dolphins 7.

Rosenthal?s take: It sounds weird, but this is a ?must? win for the Giants. They can?t afford another bad home loss with the following schedule coming up: at Patriots, at 49ers, Eagles, at Saints, Packers, and at Cowboys.? Luckily, the Giants face a squad this week that seemingly approaches every game as a ?must? lose.

Rosenthal?s pick: Giants 28, Dolphins 10.

Saints at Rams

Florio?s take:? This week, Sean Payton will be able to eat a hot dog, some nachos, a soft pretzel, and a box of popcorn.

Florio?s pick:? Saints 42, Rams 14.

Rosenthal?s take: The Rams defense is most disappointing group in the league.? The pass rush vanished.? They are a mess at cornerback and special teamers starting at linebacker.? Free-agent pickup Quintin Mikell has struggled.? Only the Colts have given up more points than St. Louis, and that?s because of what the Saints just did to Indy.? The Rams will be last in points allowed after this one.

Rosenthal?s pick: Saints 41, Rams 20.

Colts at Titans

Florio?s take:? Four days ago, the Colts lost by 55 at New Orleans.? Two years ago, the Titans endured a 59-point blowout against the Patriots.? The Titans won their next game.? That?s where the similarities end.

Florio?s pick:? Titans 30, Colts 14.

Rosenthal?s take:? The Titans were outscored 79-14 the last two games.? The Colts were outscored 62-7 last week.? Something has to give here, so I?ll guess it?s the winless team staying winless.

Rosenthal?s pick: Titans 26, Colts 17.

Redskins at Bills

Florio?s take:? Another week, another Super Bowl rematch.? The last three (Bills-Giants, Steelers-Cardinals, Colts-Saints) resulted in the same outcome.? The trend will now be reversed, thanks to a rested Bills squad and a Redskins team that has been sliding back toward reality.

Florio?s pick:? Bills 34, Redskins 24.

Rosenthal?s take: The Bills defense may have finally found a passing attack they can stop.? Or perhaps John Beck found a defense he can make noise against.? Either way, the Bills are better equipped to win a shootout. Plus Ryan Fitzpatrick?s beard just belongs in Canada. (This is the hard-hitting analysis you come to PFT for.)

Rosenthal?s pick: Bills 31, Redskins 24.

Lions at Broncos

Florio?s take:? When a Christian is thrown to the Lions, sometimes the Christian wins.? But not yet.?? Though it?s tempting to predict an upset, the Lions can?t afford to run their losing streak to three, and the Broncos simply don?t have the horses to beat a team much better than the Dolphins.

Florio?s pick:? Lions 24, Broncos 14.

Rosenthal?s take:? The Lions offense hasn?t consistently sustained drives for weeks. The Broncos passing attack had two yards halfway through the fourth quarter last week before Tim Tebow recovered an onside kick and sacked Matt Moore in overtime, before Tebow kicked a 52-yard field goal.? In short:? Expect a defensive game, with Matthew Stafford providing the drama this time.

Rosenthal?s pick: Lions 17, Broncos 13.

Patriots at Steelers

Florio?s take:? Tom Brady, not Art Rooney, owns the Pittsburgh Steelers.? Yes, it?s that simple.

Florio?s pick:? Patriots 34, Steelers 20.

Rosenthal?s take: Is the Steelers defense dominant again or have they just fattened their stats on the Seahawks, Colts, Jaguars, and Cardinals? I?m not sure the answer makes a difference. Tom Brady has a habit of shredding the Steelers even when Pittsburgh?s defense is truly elite.

Rosenthal?s pick: Patriots 30, Steelers 24.

Bengals at Seahawks

Florio?s take:? It?s easy to write off the Seahawks in this one based on their performance (or whatever that thing should be called) in Cleveland.? But they?re a different team at home, and the Bengals? 4-2 start is a little deceiving.? So whether it?s Tarvaris Jackson or Charlie Whitehurst, the Seahawks and their 12th Man will continue their up-and-down season with a showing that will be enough to generate a win.

Florio?s pick:? Seahawks 20, Bengals 17.

Rosenthal?s take: If you liked Browns-Seahawks last week, you?re going to love this one.? Cedric Benson won?t be available.? Tarvaris Jackson might be, but Charlie Whitehurst?s effort last week guarantees the Seahawks crowd won?t be chanting for the backup anymore.? I?m picking the Bengals because I want to live in a world that Andy Dalton?s crew is in first place to start November.

Rosenthal?s pick: Bengals 10, Seahawks 7.

Browns at 49ers

Florio?s take:? Now that the 49ers have gotten through a difficult stretch to start the season with a 5-1 record and are emerging from a bye, it would be fitting to see them come up flat against the Browns, especially since it?s a homecoming game of sorts for team president Mike Holmgren.? Unlike the team led by Jim Harbaugh?s brother, John, the 49ers won?t play down to the level of the Browns, who while improving have a long way to go before they can be regarded as truly improved.

Florio?s pick:? 49ers 27, Browns 17.

Rosenthal?s take: The Browns are the worst 3-3 team possible, with Colt McCoy regressing by the week. They play an ugly brand of football, but that?s the kind of game the 49ers like.? San Francisco runs better than the Browns, and they defend better too.? The 49ers are a legit 5-1 team.? Make it 6-1.

Rosenthal?s pick: 49ers 22, Browns 13.

Cowboys at Eagles

Florio?s take:? The rested Eagles can?t completely shake controversy, thanks to the comments of cornerback Asante Samuel.? But the Eagles surely sense the opportunity to seize the division, and they can?t do it without beating the Cowboys.? Though Dallas defensive coordinator Rob Ryan will have cooked up a good plan for containing Mike Vick, Andy Reid has had two weeks to come up with a way for generating offense, presumably with heavy doses of LeSean McCoy.

Florio?s pick:? Eagles 30, Cowboys 24.

Rosenthal?s take:? The Eagles are a team of extremes.? They lead the league in rushing.? They lead the league in interceptions and turnovers.? They outgain their opponents by 100 yards-per-week, and find a way to lose.? Dallas knows how to blow fourth-quarter chances too, but they have something Philly does not:? One of the best defenses in the league.

Rosenthal?s pick: Cowboys 27, Eagles 21.

Chargers at Chiefs

Florio?s take:? Suddenly, the Chiefs have become the hottest team in the AFC West.? Just as suddenly, the Chargers seem to be falling apart.? After losing 31-0 in San Diego last year, the Chiefs played the Chargers close on the road in Week Three.? Now that the rivalry returns to Arrowhead Stadium, it?s time for the Chiefs to tighten up the top of the division.

Florio?s pick:? Chiefs 27, Chargers 21.

Rosenthal?s take:? The Chiefs have quietly survived Jamaal Charles? injury, ranking seventh in rushing yards.? The Chargers have quietly stunk defending the run, giving up exactly 162 yards to the Broncos and Jets the last two games. Put them together in Arrowhead, and there might be a three-way tie for the AFC West lead.

Rosenthal?s pick: Chiefs 26, Chargers 21.

A shot of snake blood makes the heart grow

Snake oil might be best avoided but snake blood may be just what the doctor ordered. Injecting snake-blood plasma into mice increased the size of their heart. The discovery could prove key in the treatment heart damage.

In humans, an enlarged heart is normally a sign that the body is in trouble. Heart attacks, high blood pressure and defects in heart valves all force the heart to work harder and grow to manage the extra load. Growth can scar the heart and decrease the efficiency of nutrient absorption in heart cells.

The heart of the Burmese python, a subspecies of Indian python, also grows. After eating a large meal, the organ nearly doubles in size to pump recently digested nutrients around its body. This growth, however, has no negative side effects and is reversible.

Similarly, heart growth in humans is not always negative. A hormone called insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), produced during exercise, causes the heart to swell in order to meet increased bodily demand for oxygen. When growth occurs in this way, there is no scarring.

Fatty acid cocktail

After eating, a snake's blood contains a cocktail of fatty acids, some of which Leslie Leinwand from the University of Colorado at Boulder, suspected were causing the heart to grow.

To see if this enriched blood could have the same effect on other animals' cells, Leinwand coated in vitro rat heart-muscle cells with the blood plasma of recently fed snakes and found that they produced a greater volume of IGF-1 while also increasing in size. The cells were able to process fats more effectively and had a faster metabolism. The snake plasma also caused the rat cells to produce less NFAT ? a protein created when hearts are stressed.

The team next identified three fatty acids that appeared key to these helpful effects. They injected these fatty acids into healthy mice. After one week, the hearts of these mice had increased in size and showed no sign of scar tissue.

Leinwand believes that the discovery could lead to new treatments to strengthen hearts damaged by heart attack. She now plans to test the fatty acids on mice with heart disease to see if cell death in the heart can be slowed or even reversed.

Nokia announces the Lumia 800, the 'first real Windows Phone' (video)

Finally, here it is. The flagship device Nokia is counting on to bring a smile to our phone-loving faces, a sigh of relief to its shareholders, and a twinkle to the eyes of Finnish tax collectors everywhere. And, guess what? This heavily leaked handset might just live up to our high expectations. From the outside, the Lumia 800 is very similar to our beloved N9. Dubbed the "first real Windows Phone," this device is powered by a 1.4GHz CPU and is sculpted from the same 12.1mm (0.48-inch) thick of piece of durable polycarbonate plastic, with tapered edges on the top and bottom to give it that industrial look and make it feel thinner than it really is. Sitting at the top of the device is Nokia's logo, just above the company's curved ClearBlack AMOLED (800 x 480) display, with a Carl Zeiss optics-enhanced lens around back. The Lumia 800 also packs 16GB of internal storage and 25GB of free SkyDrive space, and features Nokia Drive, Nokia Music and ESPN Sports Hub baked into its OS. As for that OS, it's all about a fresh beginning: those bold squares you see on the screen are, of course, the sleek live tiles of Windows Phone Mango. The eight megapixel camera, meanwhile, packs an f/2.2 aperture, and is designed specifically for low-light environments. It seems pretty similar to what you'll find in the N9, and according to Nokia, it's simply a shooter that works for "ordinary people, under ordinary circumstances."

Now, for the basics: the Lumia 800 is priced at €420, or about $585. It's already up for pre-order now, and is scheduled to roll out across France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the UK, beginning in November. It'll make its way to Hong Kong, India, Russia, Singapore and Taiwan before the end of the year, and will hit "further markets" sometime next year. Check out a few more pics in the galleries below, or head past the break for a design video, and the official PR. For even more details, check out the Lumia 800 product page, linked below.
