Michelle Obama, Ann Romney: a study in contrasts

One is black, the other white. One was born into wealth, the other came from a working class family in Chicago, and as with the two presidential candidates, their wives -- Ann Romney and First Lady Michelle Obama -- provide a stark study in contrasts.

Both women are viewed as gracious, effective advocates for their husbands, Democratic US President Barack Obama and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

Political experts say that people vote for the president -- not their partner on the home front.

But the first lady helps to fill in important blanks, and to complete public perceptions as voters try to make of their minds about whom to pick for the White House.

That, said Catherine Allgor, a professor at the University of California, Riverside, is why people listened with rapt attention to the speech delivered by Ann Romney last week at the Republican National Convention in Tampa.

"Americans believe that these women can testify to the true man, that the way he conducts himself in his private life -- as a husband as a father as a manager of family affairs -- testifies to his morality and true character," Allgor told AFP.

They likely will be just as attentive when Michelle Obama delivers her testimonial speech praising the president at the Democrats' convention in Charlotte, North Carolina later this week.

The first lady has a role in American politics unlike the spouse married to the head of state in other countries. She can be a political force to be reckoned with in her own right.

Some believe it would be nearly impossible for a president to be accepted by the US public without a spouse and help-mate at his side. For all that, the position -- one of the most influential in Washington -- is largely ceremonial and is unpaid.

Allgor, whose specialty is the history of US first ladies, said such testimonials can have the power when they work to help the public revise its view of a candidate.

"It's very powerful. That's why these women get up there and talk about their marriages. It is a very powerful thing when someone gets it right," she said.

New York Times reporter Jodi Kantor, author of the bestselling book "The Obamas" told US public radio this week that first ladies get to be protected against incoming political fire -- even if they lob a grenade or two of their own.

"In Ann Romney's speech, she began by saying...'this is about love'" -- even while uttering a highly political speech.

"The more they seem above the fray, above the politics, the more effective they are," Kantor said.

The current US first lady is a Princeton and Harvard educated attorney, a career woman who at one point was the main breadwinner in the Obama family. She has embraced various initiatives in the president's first term, including supporting military families and her "Let's Move!" initiative to improve kids' diets and combat childhood obesity.

Ann Romney, 63, has been a stay-at-home mother who never entered the workforce, instead choosing to stay active in parents' and other civic groups. She has waged a years-long struggles with multiple sclerosis -- which she has said that her pursuits as an equestrian have helped to control -- and breast cancer, which is in remission.

A convert to her husband's Mormon faith, the businessman's daughter received a bachelor's degree in French from Brigham Young University.

Ann Romney is perhaps is cut from more traditional, somewhat patrician cloth in terms of how people think of the first lady in years gone by, like the silver haired pearl-wearing Barbara Bush or the poised, understated Laura Bush.

By contrast, Obama, 48, as the first African-American first lady, has tried open up the White House to more diverse influences, installing art works there for instance by black artists, and hosting a concert series at the White House that celebrated diverse musical styles, from country to jazz to blues to rock. She is the mother of two daughters.

Obama and Romney have taken opposite views as to whether to watch the opposite party's convention. Michelle Obama told the "Late Night with David Letterman Show" last week that she did not watch any of the Republican pageant.

"I, as the wife of the guy they are running against, I tend not to watch it," Obama said on Wednesday night's show.

Ann Romney however told Fox News last week that she would be tuning in to the Democrats' convention with great interest.

"I want to hear the president speak and I'm assuming Michelle will speak and I want to hear her as well," the would-be first lady said.

Product Creation Advice - Internet Revenue Articles

?

By Maritza Parra

I recently did a question and answer webinar and received many questions on the same subject?what exactly to do once you?ve created your audio product.

?I feel the only thing holding me up is the actual piecing together of getting my new product listed on my site, adding a payment option and getting all of the steps done in the right order. I feel paralyzed because I?m afraid I?ll miss something. The order of doing everything is what I?m overwhelmed by? help!?

Here?s a list of what to do after you?ve created your audio product

1. To Edit or Not to Edit. Does your audio product need some small editing? Keyword here is small. You don?t want to get stuck on making it perfect. Remember, it?s all about progress and not about perfection. Do you need to edit your audio? If your child is crying in the background or there?s a dog barking? yes. If you speak normally and have some Ahs and Ums? no. As long as the content is good, you don?t need to sound like you spent weeks in a professional studio. Get a copy of a low-cost or free audio editing software if you think you should do some small editing. Be sure and plan ahead for uninterrupted quiet when creating your audios because many times, you can create your audio without the need to edit afterward.

2. Brainstorm a Great Title. Think about what your audio product will deliver to your customers. What is it they really want? Try to avoid ?cutesy? titles that can detract from the value of your information.

3. Consider a Cover. Seriously think about getting a professional cover created for your audio product. This creates a higher perceived value in the mind of potential customers and clients. You can also just have a low-cost logo created as long as it looks professional in place of an audio CD cover.

4. Write The Product Sales Page. Wherever you put your audio product for sale, you will need some compelling sales copywriting. This is a great skill to cultivate. You can also choose to outsource this is you have the budget. When writing your sales copy, remember it is all about the customer and the bottom line benefits they will get from your product. This is not the place to focus on you and your greatness (?though I am sure you are!)

5. Choose How to Accept Money. You have many alternatives in shopping carts and there is always paypal. In the past, PayPal was seen as unprofessional but those days are over. It?s a fabulous option today. You are up and running very quickly and when you make a sale, the money you?ve earned is available instantly instead of days later as with a traditional shopping cart and merchant account.

6. Add Your Buy Now Button. Get the code for your button and place it in your sales page several times throughout the page. This is like asking people to buy several times. Don?t just ask once.

7. Ask Your List to Buy Now. It doesn?t matter how ?small? you feel your list community is, as soon as you have your sales page with your buy now button ready, ask your list community to buy your audio product. Give them a special incentive to do so immediately. A subscriber appreciation gift of X dollars if they purchase within the next 3 days. Email them each of these days to remind them of why they should buy your product (the benefit to them) and how many days or hours they have left to purchase your product at this special price. This serves several purposes, you will get a burst of confidence and momentum from seeing your first sales in this product and the infusion of cash can help you continue to find new subscribers and customers.

8. Find New Subscribers and Customers. After you?ve created your product and put it online to sell, it isn?t over. Just like a ?real? bricks and mortars business, you should always be looking for new potential customers and clients.

9. Keep Asking for the Sale. Do not hide your product once you?ve created it. Place a link to your sales page on your blog, recommend it as a subscriber resource in your newsletter or articles. Every once in a while, have another sales price event.

And now I would like to invite you to claim your Free Instant Access to my ?Easy Product Creation Secrets? Video to learn to record an audio product for free, turn it into an Ebook, turn that into a Video product and more when you visit http://www.ProductCreationBonus.com.

Social Business: So You're Doing a Facebook Contest?. | Business ...

For many small businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs, social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn has seemingly created new channels and spawned a multiplicity of ways to connect for them to reach out to and connect their audience(s).? Unfortunately, the reality is easier said than done: Because social platforms are both cost-effective and readily accessible, the number of voices being transmitted in this digital milieu has increased exponentially.? Furthermore, the number of corporate brands that now actively use?and promote?their social media presence has increased significantly in the last 2-3 years, so that their messages and engagement initiatives tend to overshadow the voices of smaller, independent businesses, still-growing start-up companies, etc.

After all, how can locally-owned ?Mom & Pop Shop XYZ? amplify its internet voice or capture the attention of Facebook users when a majority of its audience is far more preoccupied by P&G?s latest product giveaway or ESPN?s newest fan contest?? I?ve watched many small businesses attempt to draw in new customers, or attempt to capture new market shares from their larger, better-known competitors, only to walk away disappointed, underwhelmed, or even worse, with a negative ROI on their social media campaign investment.? One of the most expensive tactics?and a favorite of many B2C brand giants?the social contest or giveaway model, has been especially ineffective for many of the small business owners and entrepreneurs that I?ve spoken with.? Many small companies and business owners pay thousands of dollars to partner with a third-party agency or fulfillment company to set-up these promotions, then struggle to attract Facebook users, improve their engagement metrics, and increase the recognition and visibility of their product or brand over the duration of the promotion.? Yet, much of this underperformance can be attributed to clogged communication channels, poor networking and ineffective word-of-mouth sharing (both on- and off-line).? While little can be done about the first issue (or at least, I don?t have any advice or methods for decreasing or silencing the non-stop chatter that abounds in the social realm), there are ways around the latter two.

Amplifying your social voice and online presence through a contest sponsorship or freebie giveaway should be easy, right?? Who doesn?t love free stuff, or experiencing the thrill of winning?the gambler?s joy of getting something for (supposedly) nothing?? And for businesses and/or sales teams, the lead captures from all those completed online entry forms ought to virtually guarantee a high ROI, right?? Wrong.? Among the small business owners, entrepreneurs, and start-up brands that I?ve spoken with on this subject, many of the leads captured through contest or freebie promotions were either unqualified leads, or they were existing customers who already knew about the product or business.? However, I won?t discuss the merits of the latter, or how to go about determining and understanding the value or ROI here, suffice it to say that this audience segment wasn?t the desired target audience that most of my colleagues or clients were seeking.? Clearly, their social media conversations, online promoting, and advertising methods weren?t doing enough to separate their voice from the rest of the crowd and didn?t capture the attention of social users unfamiliar with the business, brand, or product.? This is where the right networking tactics and leveraging your network connections can make the difference between a strike-out and a home run.

Tip 1: Reach out to the Blogosphere

Like any reasonable, financially prudent individual in this economy, I love a good bargain and am not above using a coupon (or eight) during a weekly grocery run, or doing online research before making a purchase to make sure I?m getting the best deal possible.? Though I?m barely a novice?at best?in the art of practiced frugality, I?ve stumbled upon some great money-saving, extreme-couponer and ?freebies? blogs over the years.? Snicker though you may, many of these penny-pinching fanatics have built up a devoted, equally thrifty readership capable of crashing even the best-built Facebook contest platform on any given day.

Prior to the start of your contest or sampling promotion, draft a press release or design an embeddable promo ad that can be sent electronically to bloggers.? Be sure to outline promo requirements, rules, and other pertinent info in a format that is both professional and straightforward.? Remember, all messages communicated on behalf of your business or product impact how your brand is perceived, including its overall legitimacy and integrity.? If your promotion is based on a free sample giveaway or grand prize drawing, include photo representations of sample product(s) or prizes.? Bloggers love to dangle the proverbial carrot in front of their readers? mouths and the more enticing, or lucrative an offer, the bigger the carrot.? Perhaps the only thing these bloggers like more than free swag is posting the best contests, deals, and freebies first.? Like businesses, they too are forced to stand apart from competing voices, and the best way to build and grow a loyal readership is to publish quality content.? Many bloggers also syndicate their content through Facebook pages, and will offer contest reminders or blog updates for their readers once an offer goes live or a promotion officially begins.

Building a relationship with reputable bloggers is a mutually symbiotic relationship if embarked upon properly.? Better yet, it doesn?t cost a cent (unless you?re paying someone to develop PR materials or design digital campaign collateral for you) and provides the basis for a solid brand experience foundation that will befit your brand?s influence and reputation in the future.? Another advantage of forging and leveraging such blog connections is the free word-of-mouth buzz and increased brand or business exposure that will increase internet traffic to your social media pages, website, and other online holdings.? Many bloggers will like to post backlinks to published content?s original source, or may be genuinely excited about what you?re offering that they voluntarily provide backlinks in their comments, posts, or forum discussions?all of which gets factored into your SEO rank and impacts how easily internet users can find your business or product page(s) in internet searches.

The bottom line?? While Unilever, P&G, Kroger and Co. may not have the time or interest in connecting online with random, average-Joe bloggers (and why would they, when they?ve already spent millions on multi-channel, multimedia, multi-market contest campaigns?), blogger engagement and networking should be an essential activity included as part of your next promotional giveaway or contest marketing campaign.? You may only be able to raise your voice so high, but you can certainly add other voices to harmonize with yours and focus some of that excess, non-relevant chatter.

How gene profiling in emphysema is helping to find a cure

Saturday, September 1, 2012

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the third leading cause of death in the United States and is thought to affect almost three million people in the UK. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal Genome Medicine has identified genes whose activity is altered with increasing lung damage and, using a database of drug effects on gene activity (the Connectivity Map), finds that the compound Gly-His-Lys (GHK) affects the activity of these genes. When tested on human cells from lungs damaged by emphysema, GHK was able to restore normal gene activity and repair cell function.

The strongest cause of COPD is smoking, and at least 25% of smokers will develop this disease. Tobacco smoke and other irritants cause oxidative stress and chronic inflammation, which over time results in emphysema, the destruction of lung alveolar cells. Without these cells, the lungs are not able to efficiently exchange oxygen for carbon dioxide, leaving the patient continuously short of breath and with low levels of oxygen in their blood.

In a ground breaking, multi-centre, study funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH), researchers used cells taken from lungs donated by patients undergoing double lung transplant, whose own lungs were irrevocably damaged by COPD. Profiling of these samples showed that 127 genes had changes in activity that was associated with worsening disease severity within the lung. As would be expected from the nature of the disease, several genes associated with inflammation, such as the genes involved in signalling to B-cells (the immune system cells which make antibodies), showed increased activity.

In contrast genes involved in maintaining cellular structure and normal cellular function, along with the growth factors TGF? and VEGF, were down-regulated and showed decreased activity. This included genes which control the ability of the cells to stick together (cell adhesion), produce the protein matrix which normally surrounds the cells, and which promote the normal association between lung cells and blood vessels.

Dr Avrum Spira and Dr Marc Lenburg, who co-led this study from the Boston University School of Medicine, explained, "When we searched the Connectivity Map database, which is essentially a compendium of experiments that measure the effect of therapeutic compounds on every gene in the genome, we found that how genes were affected by the compound GHK, a drug known since the 1970s, was the complete opposite of what we had seen in the cells damaged by emphysema."

Dr Joshua Campbell explained, "What got us especially excited was that previous studies had shown that GHK could accelerate wound repair when applied to the skin. This made us think that GHK could have potential drug's as a therapy for COPD."

Prof James Hogg, from the University of British Columbia continued, "When we tested GHK on cells from the damaged lungs of smokers with COPD, we saw an improvement in the structure of their actin cytoskeleton and in cell adhesion, especially to collagen. GHK also restored the ability of cells to reorganise themselves to repair wounds and construct the contractile filaments essential for alveolar function."

GHK is a natural peptide found in human plasma, but the amount present decreases with age. While more testing needs to be done on its effects in COPD, these early results are very promising. Therapeutic studies with GHK in animal models of COPD are now underway with the ultimate goal of moving this compound into clinical trials. As more gene activity signatures are discovered, this method of matching drug to disease may provide a rapid method for discovering potential uses for existing drugs and compounds.

Gwent police to offer extra help for LGBT victims of domestic violence

Victims of same-sex domestic abuse are to be offered extra support by police in Wales.

The LGBT liaison officers of Gwent police force have been given extra training in order to better understand the issue and provide extra support through the criminal justice system.

As reported in the Caerphilly Observer, in 2011/12 there were just ten incidents of same-sex domestic abuse reported to the police. The force have suggested this means people are afraid to report it.

Gwent police speculated that it may be due to a fear of being potentially outed ? and a fear of the report not being taken seriously.

Gwent Police Chief Constable Carmel Napier, said: ?Gwent Police offers extensive support to victims of domestic abuse, but the LGBT officer service is tailored to recognise the particular needs and concerns faced by someone in a same-sex relationship.

?This service means that victims of same-sex domestic abuse are offered additional support from the moment they report a crime. Of course, as with anyone in an intimate relationship and they have concerns about a partner, those in same-sex relationships can also apply for disclosure under Clare?s Law.

?If the LGBT officer service gives victims of same-sex domestic abuse the confidence to report an incident and follow it through the investigation and court process then that?s a huge positive step in tackling and combating these awful crimes that often remain silent.?

Gwent Police LGBT liaison officers have existed since December 2010 to provide support and guidance to victims of LGBT hate crime.

This new service will be offered alongside the?latter.
