Bombings, shootings hit restive southern Thailand (AP)

PATTANI, Thailand ? Attackers believed to be Muslim insurgents have killed four people and set off a string of homemade bombs in Thailand's restive south.

Police Col. Kwandee Chimplee said two men and one woman were shot dead at a grocery store in the city of Narathiwat early Sunday, while another man was killed in neighboring Songkhla province.

Police Maj. Gen. Chaitat Intanujit says suspected militants detonated homemade bombs at 10 spots in five out of 13 districts in the province as evening fell, causing property damage but no casualties. The targets included grocery stores, shops and residences.

Narathiwat is one of three Muslim-dominated provinces in Thailand's far south where an Islamist insurgency that erupted in 2004 has left almost 5,000 people dead.
