Gingrich May Not Be the Guy to Beat Obama (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | I'm convinced the White House would prefer to run against Newt Gingrich rather than Mitt Romney.

The liberal media, currently enthused by the Gingrich surge, would reverse ground to heighten the drama of a liberal big government president vs. a flawed Reaganite political virtuoso.

The president's reliable media allies would pose a misunderstood and sincere president who really wants the best for us against the arch-demon of reckless bull-in-a-china-shop conservatism, Newt Gingrich.

President Barack Obama seems intent on rewriting America's past. Defeating Gingrich is the best way to do that. In that endeavor, the liberal media will be more enthusiastic and effective than the president's political advisers.

According to the Media Research Center, which derives the information from outside media studies, the mainstream media is overwhelmingly liberal.

The voting public gets its news largely from reporters who vote Democrat and convince even themselves they are being "objective."

They will pillory Romney for "flip-flopping" and for Bain Capital, but no one will accuse him of political corruption.

The ideological purity contingent of the Republican Party recognizes Gingrich as the true conservative heir to Ronald Reagan. The American Prospect reports "Gingrich has unimpeachable conservative credentials."

It's easy to understand Gingrich's appeal. He joins a battle with a warrior's lust for victory and a Reagan-era halo.

Gingrich supporters envision a dogfight, with pit bull Gingrich pitted against a failed big government president. But what they will really get is a catfight, with President Obama speaking softly, saying little but saying it eloquently, against a backdrop of adoring media.

Fox News reports a resurrection of the climate change video Gingrich made with then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Fanny Mae will be criticized, but, oh, by the way, did we mention Gingrich consulted for $1.6 million?

Aren't conservatives supposed to champion family values? Then how is it Gingrich was married three times?

I was surprised to hear from Reuters that ultra-conservative radio talk-show host Michael Savage, on his website, offered Gingrich $1 million to drop out of the GOP primary race.

As Savage handicaps Gingrich's image against that of Obama, Gingrich will "look like nothing more than what he is: a fat, old white man."

Gingrich is surely better than that, but his impulsive equivocation of Fanny Mae with Bain Capital has delighted Democrats and driven some Republicans into the Romney camp.
