Crockett jumps into Salt Lake County mayor?s race

Professionally, Mark Crockett helps companies be more efficient.

He wants to lead Salt Lake County in the same direction. Crockett, who spent four years on the County Council before losing a 2008 election to Jani Iwamoto, will be the third Republican candidate to join the race for the county mayor?s seat being vacated at year?s end by Democrat Peter Corroon.

Crockett?s starting point: Get the county out of delivering municipal services so it can concentrate limited resources on core services ? running jails and providing human services and treatment programs.

"If we were to focus the county on those core services, and not compete with the cities on municipal services," he said, "over time we could become a lot smarter about the core services we deliver."

Moving in this direction will be particularly important to residents of unincorporated west-side communities, Crockett said. That?s part of the reason why he has decided to announce his candidacy formally next Tuesday in Magna.

If Millcreek incorporates or parts of that east-side township are annexed into existing cities, Crockett said, "it could be hard for west-side areas that are left behind" unless the county functions as a "good-faith facilitator," clearing the way for cities to provide city-style services in unincorporated areas.

The 46-year-old Holladay resident said his private-sector experience with ViciCapitalcq Partners will help him accomplish his goals despite county revenues being drained deeply by the recession.

"The county has to figure out how to do more with less," Crockett said. "That is what I do for a living."

Matt Burbank, a University of Utah political scientist, is a bit surprised by the way the county mayor?s race is shaping up.

Having two Democrats (state Sens. Ross Romero and Ben McAdams) in the fray is unusual, he said, because the party tries to avoid internal fights since so few Utah Democrats hold office.

But since Democrats do better in Salt Lake County than elsewhere in this Republican state, Burbank said he would not have expected so much GOP interest in the mayor?s seat.

Crockett joins County Councilman Richard Snelgrove and County Recorder Gary Ott in seeking the Republican nod. Another potential GOP candidate, West Valley City Mayor Mike Winder, said Friday he is getting close to a decision. "It?s absolutely an option I?m still considering."
