March is Colorectal Cancer awareness month and advocates are working hard to get the word out about the importance for colon cancer screening.

The Cancer Services Program of Monroe County held the Bowling for Blue tournament at Clover Lanes Friday, where they got a chance to talk to people about the disease and encourage them to get tested.

The National Cancer Institute says that 1 and 20 people will develop colorectal cancer in their lifetime. Colorectal cancer is still one of the leading causes cancer-related deaths in the US. Just here in Monroe County 370 people are diagnosed with colon cancer every year... 140 of them will die from the disease.

Experts say the best way to prevent colon cancer, is to catch it early and that's possible by having a colonoscopy. It's recommended people have their first screening at age 50.

Those who have had it done say it's an easy and painless test.

"I've had it done three times," said Kathy Ritz of Hilton. "Then last year I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and because of the proximity to the colon, now I'm on the three year plan. But it's not like everybody thinks, the worst part is drinking that stuff the day before."

Ritz says she's in remission from the ovarian cancer and doctors found nothing cancerous in her colonoscopy.

The Cancer Services Program of Monroe County also offers people without insurance this FIT kit, an at-home screening kit that looks for blood in the stool- an early indicator of cancer.

You can call the program for a test or for more information.
